Representation of black men in early childhood education is essential to promoting equity in DC charter
schools. Many black males go their entire academic career without being taught by a single person that looks
like them. Currently, only two percent of school teachers in the US are black men, and even fewer specialize
inearly childhood education. Greater representation of black men in the classroom during those crucial early
Years has been shown to improve outcomes for students of color. Recruiting black male educators, however,
has always been a challenge.
4s principal of Eagle Academy's Congress Heights campus, Max Lyttle encourages black men to consider
¢Zreers in education and mentors black male teachers at his school. Joined by a panel of black male educators
from Eagle, Lyttle will discuss recruiting strategies, the unique challenges black male educators face, and their
impact on young black male students and their communities.
