III Weekly
Test
(25/10/2021)
Chapter 4 –AIR (Till
pg. 24,topic Air
Pressure including it)
Q1.
a. iv (first decreases then increases)
b. iii (Thermosphere)
c. i (Wind Direction)
d. iii (Troposphere)

Q2.
a. atmosphere.
b. Sun.
c. Mid-day
d. Barometer.

ANSWERS
Q3:
a. Atmospheric pressure.
b. Insolation.
c. Ultra-violet rays.

Q4:
a. On the moon there is no air and hence no air pressure. Astronauts have to
wear special protective space suits filled with air when they go to the moon. If
they did not wear these space suits, the counter pressure exerted by the body
of the astronauts would make the blood vessels burst. The astronauts would
bleed.

b. Air pressure is defined as the pressure exerted by the weight of air on the
earth’s surface.

c. Ionosphere is a part of thermosphere which extends between 80-400 km

.This layer helps in radio transmission as radio waves transmitted from the
earth are reflected to the earth by this layer.

d. 1.The crowded high-rise buildings of the cities trap the warm air and thus
raise the temperature of the cities.
2.The concrete and metals in buildings and minerals like asphalt used for
constructing roads get heated up during the day and this heat is released
during the night.
e. 1.Stratosphere is almost free from clouds and associated weather phenomenon
,making conditions most ideal for flying aeroplanes.
2. Another important feature of this layer is that it contains a layer of ozone gas
which protects us from the harmful effect of the sun rays.

Q5:
a. Air we take in is actually a mixture of many gases such as Nitrogen, Oxygen,
Carbon Dioxide etc .
NITROGEN
1.Is the most plentiful gas in the air .

2.When we inhale, we take some amount of nitrogen into our lungs and exhale it

3.However plants need nitrogen for their survival. They cannot take nitrogen
directly from the air .Bacteria ,that live in the soil and roots of some plants ,take
nitrogen from the air and change its form so that plants can use it.

OXYGEN
1.Is the second most plentiful gas in the air .

2.Humans and animals take oxygen from the air as they breathe . Green plants
produce oxygen during photosynthesis .In this way oxygen content in the air
remains constant .

3. If we cut trees then this balance gets disturbed.

CARBON DIOXIDE
1.Is another important gas .Green plants use carbon dioxide to prepare their food and release
oxygen. Human or animals release carbon dioxide . The amount of carbon dioxide released
by humans or animals seems to be equal to the amount used by the plants which make a
perfect balance .

2.However the balance is upset by burning of fuels ,such as coal and oil .They add billions of
tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year. As a result ,the increased volume of
carbon dioxide is affecting the earth’s weather and climate.

b.
WEATHER CLIMATE
1. Weather refers to the state of 1.Climate refers to the sum total of the
atmosphere over a comparatively smaller weather conditions and variations over a
area at a point of time. large area for a longer period of time.
2. Weather data are recorded for a shorter 2. Climate is recorded for a longer period of
period of time. i.e. a dew hours, a few time. i.e. more than 30 years.
days or few weeks.
3. Weather condition fluctuate very often, 3. Climatic condition do not fluctuate very
even within a day. often, it may take decades.

c. The increase in the temperature of the earth due to rise in the level of carbon
dioxide in the atmosphere is called global warming .
CAUSES - :

The level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases due to -:

1. Deforestation
2. Over population
3. Burning of fuels like coal, petroleum etc

STEPS TO REDUCE GLOBAL WARMING:-

1. Afforestation i.e. by planting more trees.
2. Using renewable sources of energy like Solar energy, wind energy etc.
3. Reduce the usage of Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’S).
4. By following the concept of 3 R’s i.e. Reduce ,Re use and Recycle.

d. Our atmosphere is divided into five layers starting from the earth’s surface
.These are -:

1. TROPOSPHERE
i. The most important layer of the atmosphere as the air we breathe exists here.
ii. Its average height is 13 km.
iii. Almost all the weather phenomena like rain, fog and hailstorm occur in this
layer.

2.STRATOSPHERE
i. It lies above the troposphere and extends up to a height of 50 km.
ii. This layer is almost free from clouds and associated weather phenomenon ,making conditions
most ideal for flying aeroplanes.
iii. One important feature of this layer is that it contains a layer of ozone gas which protects us
from the harmful effect of the sun rays.

3.MESOSPHERE
i. This is the third layer of the atmosphere which lies above the stratosphere.
ii. It extends up to the height of 80 km.
iii. Meteorites burn up in this layer on entering from the space.

4.THERMOSPHERE
I .In thermosphere temperature rises very rapidly with increasing height.
ii. Ionosphere is a part of this layer which extends between 80-400 km .This layer helps in radio
transmission. In fact , radio waves transmitted from the earth are reflected back to the earth by
this layer.

5. EXOSPHERE
i. The upper most layer of the atmosphere is known as exosphere.
ii. This layer has very thin air .
iii. Light gases like helium and hydrogen float into the space from here .

e. All living beings on this earth depend on the atmosphere for their survival.
1. The atmosphere contains oxygen, the gas living beings need to breathe to stay alive.
2. The atmosphere blocks harmful effects ultra-violet radiations to reach Earth.
3. Without this blanket of protection we would have been baked alive by the heat of the sun’s
rays during the day and get frozen during night.
CASE STUDY:

Q1: The air above us presses us with a great force on our bodies. However, we
don’t even feel it. This is because the air presses us from all directions and our
body exerts a counter pressure.

Q2: In areas where temperature is high the air gets heated and rises. This
creates a low-pressure area.

Q3: The air pressure is highest at sea level and it decreases with increasing
height.

ASSERTION AND REASONING:
