PILOTS BRIEFING

GENERAL

Runway in use will be as determined by prevailing wind.


• Parking for participating aircraft will be allocated on arrival.
• Where possible all aircraft must arrive with enough fuel for a display and return flight to
destination.

HAZARDS

• There are sufficient emergency landing areas surrounding the airfield as well as in FAD 70.
• Red and White Mast on the ridge north of the airfield. Visible from a distance and a well-
known landmark in FADF 70.
• Satellite tracking disks in FAD 70 to be avoided by at least 2 nm.

RATINGS

• All display must have valid ratings.


• All aircraft must be fully licence.
• All participating pilots must have Public Liability insurance.

HEIGHTS

• The airfield elevation is 5100' AMSL


• Circuit height for fixed wings- 6100'AMSL
• Circuit Height for helicopters - 5600' AMSL
• FAD 70 entering height - 7000' AMSL or higher
• FAD 70 exit height - 6500' AMSL or lower.

RADIO FREQUENCIES

• Orient (FAOI) - 123.4


• FAD 70 - 124.8
• All pilot to do blind transmissions and operate according to published unmanned
procedures
RADIO FAILURE

Prior to take- off


• Cancel flight, switch on all external lights, and return to the apron.
Airborne
• Squak 7600.
• Join overhead to determine active runway for landing.
• Switch all external lights on.
• Continue to make blind transmissions in case it might be only a reception problem.
• KEEP A GOOD LOOK OUT FOR OTHER TRAFFIC

In FAD 70
• Squak 7600.
• Return to FAD 70 as briefed
• Join overhead to determine active runway for landing.
• Switch all external lights on.
• Continue to make blind transmissions in case it might be only a reception problem.
• KEEP A GOOD LOOK OUT FOR OTHER TRAFFIC

ON FIELD EMERGENCIES

• In the event of an "On Field" emergency resulting in aircraft not being able to land at Orient
the following airfields are closest to Orient:
o Crosswind Airfield.
o Krugersdorp (Jack Taylor)
o Lanseria (FALA)

AIRBORNE EMERGENCIES
• Declare Emergency by means of a Mayday or Pan call on 123.4 or 124.8.
• Both frequencies will be manned
• EMS will be activated to take appropriate action.

EMERGENCY LANDINGS

• This will be at the discretion of the pilot, taking into account the safety of the people and
property on the ground. The area surrounding Orient as well as FAD 70 has ample suitable
emergency landing areas.

RUNWAYS
• Primary runway - 18/36. 1171m x 21 m. Grass surface. Consists of a left and right runway.
Only the western runway is to be used as the eastern runway is dedicated for glider
operations.
• Secondary runway - 11/29. 1000m x 21 m. Grass surface

WEATHER MINIMA
• Vertical: 1500 ft AGL.
• Lateral: 5000m Visibility.
CREW
• During displays NO pax will be allowed.
• No aerial photo shoots will be allowed during any of the flights.
• All crew and airside members will adhere STRICTLY to the rules concerning wearing of high
visibility and protective clothing.

GENERAL AIRMANSHIP
• Please ensure that , during start up, taxi, shut down or any other ground manoeuvre, the
aircraft's prop wash, jet blast or rotor wash does not in any way inconvenience or endanger
people or structures in the vicinity.
• Observe GOOD AIRMANSHIP at all times.
• Note that there will be an unusual amount of people working on the apron for this event.
• Keep a good lookout.
• Obey all instructions from ground marshals.

AIR CREW BRIEFING


• A compulsory briefing will take place at 0630B on Friday 6 Nov 202 in the marquee tent for
the aircrew.

NO pilot will be allowed to take part in any display unless he has:


• Signed an indemnity form.
• Signed an attendance register.

TIMETABLE
• Pilots are requested to adhere to their scheduled times throughout. Final time schedule will
be communicated during the briefing

TIMING
• Strap in. This is the time that the crews of participating aircraft should be in their
aircraft ready to start. Call for start.
• Duration. The time allowed for the full duration.
• Take Off. The time for applying full power for take-off to go into a hold or commence
the display.
• Land Time. The expected time of landing.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• SAFETY DIRECTOR
• The SD will ensure that all flights are conducted in accordance with the safety rules
and the restrictions as briefed. They have vested in them the authority of the
SACAA, to enforce these rules under SACAA's designation.

• The FDD has the right to call off or adjust the event and has the final say. Any
disputes will be dealt with after the event.

• Pilots
• Any pilot experiencing a problem, which may give rise to a safety risk during a
display, must advise the Safety Director immediately.
• Execute emergency measures relevant to the problem.

SAFETY PHILOSOPHY
• The prevention of the incident and accidents by means of pro-active measures, will
determine the safety of everyone during the event.
• An "Emergency Response Plan" is in place to manage any emergencies.
• All pilots acknowledge and accept, that despite all reasonable measures and best
efforts being taken, the organizers, safety officers, appointed officials and
emergency services may not be able to timorously gain access to or bring under
control a situation as a result of any incident or accident during his participation at a
special air event, accordingly they are unable to guarantee the safety or the
favourable outcome of an accident, incident and any risk, injury or death that arise
as a result of such accident or incident.

SAFETY REGULATION

• Statutory Requirements
• Certificate of Airworthiness
• Participating Aircraft operators must submit evidence to the
Safety Officer the aircraft intended to be used during the
display, is certified as airworthy if so required, in respect of all
aspects planned to be displayed. This will also apply to
Authority to fly permits in the case of Non-type Certified
aircraft.
• Aircrew participating in any CF2020 shall be in possession of a
valid and appropriate license and ratings.
• Aircrew participating in any CF2020 flight shall be in possession
of public liability insurance.

NO IMPROTU DISPLAYS OR FLIGHTSWILL BE ALLOWED

MANEUVRE LIMITATIONS
• Bearing in mind that all the kids that will be flown are first time flyers.
Most of the kids were exposed to some trauma during their life. Please
take this into account and try your utmost to make this a positive
experience.
• It is understandable that the kids will be nervous even after having been
briefed.
• Observe their reactions and be ON THE LOOKOUT FOR ANY PANIC
ACTIONS/REACTIONS which could jeopardise the safety of the flight.
• Adjust your flight profile to suit the comfort levels of your passenger.
