Introduction JOBO processing drums permit daylight processing of colour and black-and-white prints as well as sheet films, Two drum sizes are available for different sheet sizes and capacities as listed in the table on page I For solution quantities see the makers" instructions with the chemical kits, noting the minimum quantities listed in section 4 The solution beaker In the lid of each drum size holds up to 500 mi No. 4531 and 4551 JOBODRUM proces- sing drums incorporate magnets for moto rised rotation in JOBO Color Processors. -JOBO 4590 and 4550 processing drums for ‘manual rotation can be converted to moto- Fised rotation. See section 9 for spec conversion kits, also for older drum mo- dels and including CIBA and DURST pro- cessing drums. JOBODRUM processing drums are supp- lied complete with the following accesso- ries JOBODRUM 4530 and 4531 3 print holders without spacer Sprint Molders with spacer ‘format holder No. 4206 JOBODRUM 4550 and 4551 Sprint holders without spacer Sprint holders with spacer 1 format holder No. 4206 1 format holder No. 4511 "A format holderNo. 451215 avaliable trom photo dealers for: 1 sheet 50 x 60 cm/20 x 24"°or 2 sheets 30x40 cm/12x 16" oF 4 sheets 24 x 30.xm/9.5 x 12" 2. Preparing solutions and tempera- ture for manual rotation Paper and chemical manufacturers offer a wide range of processing kits. For consis tently good results carefully observe the Instructions with the kits. Note especially, the timing, accurate temperature control Of stock and working solutions, constant processing temperature and even rotation of the tank Prepare stock solutions in brown 1000 mi JOBO bottles for developer and white bott- les for other solutions. For each step in the No. 4530 drum measure out the amounts in 250 mi JOBO measures; with the No. 4860 drum pour directly from the 1000 mi darkroom bottle. Have ready also a JOBO black-and-white/colour thermo- meter (up to 50°C) for constant tempera ture monitoring. ‘The higher the temperature, the more rapid the process. JOBO Color Processors are ‘deat here, For manual rotation preferably use pro- cesses running at 20-25°C (68-77°F} ‘Temperature control of the solutions is au- tomatic ifthe room is kept at this tempe- ratue. ‘Another way is hot charging. The shape and material characteristics of the JOBO- DRUM are particularly suitable for this procedure, using solutions warmed up in a water bath (bucket, tray or JOBO tempe- ring box. The solutions are here warmed up beyond the process temperature and then poured into the drum at room temperature. The solution temperature required here de- ends on the type of chemistry and pro- essing duration. The highly versatile me- thod is described in various books aval- lable trom photo dealers, Used solutions oan be replenished by ad- ding fresh solution; this procedure how- fever needs some experience, 3. Preparing solutions and tempera- ture control for motorised rotation All processes can be used nere. JOBO Color Processors mest current process requirements of constant temperature. For description and use see the Color Proces- sor instructions. 4, Minimum quantities Further to the data of the paper and che- mical manufacturers note that the solution quantities listed below are minimum amounts needed for perfect wetting of ma- terials In the tank, 6 Prints. Move the slide of the format holder against the edge of the flim fr paper, bend the format holder to keep the material clamped in position and push Into the drum between the drum guide strips. The transparent plastic also facill- tates reversal re-exposure, Use one format holder per sheet film or aper size. Push the exposed print — emulsion side ‘up — into the half shell but only far ‘enough to let the edge of the paper catch behind the bent-back edge of the carrier sheet to prevent sliding back. Processing sequence for manual and motorised rotation 6.1 Pouring solutions into JOBODRUM 4530 and 4531 ull off the push-on cover. ® Prepare the requited solution quantities for prints or sheet films. Smoothly and without splashing pour the solution into the charging funnel of the drum. © Then fit the push-on cover which prevents. solution leakage from the lid during rotation. 6.2 Pouring solutions into JOBODRUM 4550 and 4551 ‘There is no need for measures, as the lid Indicates the amount of solution poured —— oasuring rt (On pouring in the solution, the floater ral ses the measuring rod to show when the required amount has been poured in. First set the exact amount wanted by pushing the sliding sleeve to the appropriate divi- sion (in 100 mi steps) of the measuring rod. The tank contains the required solu- tion quantity as soon as the top of the sleeve appears on top of the guide tube. Now fit the push-on cap to prevent so- lution leakage from the lid during rotation. 6.3 Re-exposure for reversal proces- sing Sheet film For the re-exposure leave sheet films in the format holder No. 4206. Remove the format holder from the drum and re-expo- se as recommended by the film manufac turer. Prints Prints can remain in the drum if a water- proof portable lamp with 8 watt 220 volt fluorescent tube Is used. Introduce this in the drum and rotate it about ite axis during the exposure period 6.4 Manual rotation Quickly tum the drum down on the hori- zontal surface. The developer now runs ut of the beaker and spreads over the material being processed. Immediately Start rolling to and fro and set the timer. Use the processing times indicated by the maker of the chemical kit, reserving the last 10 seconds of each period for emp= tying and refilling the drum. Roll over a path of at least 50 cm or 20 inches — i.e. ‘approximately one drum revolution. For ‘most consistent results one roll to and fro should take about 2 seconds. Keep up a Uniform rolling rhythm, ® ‘At he end of each processing step pull off ‘the push-on cap and turn the drum upside ‘down to empty it 6.5 Motorised rotation Proceed according to the instructions for the Color Processor used. All JOBO processing drums for manual rotation can be converted to motorised rotation —s0e section 8. 7.Final rinse After processing fll the drum with water for a pre-rinse and rotate for about 10 se- ‘conds. Then insert the drum body comple- te with contents in a washing tray and rinse repeatedly. ® Pull out the format holder with Its con- tents or the prints without format holder ‘and rinse thoroughly in running wate ‘Take care not to injure the very delicate film or print emulsion surface. Before reloading, thoroughly clean the drum and its accessorl Trouble shooting White spots along one edge.
