SML Isuzu Limited (SMLI) is a commercial vehicle


manufacturer established in 1983. SMLI produces and
sells buses, ambulances and customized vehicles. Sumitomo
Corporation and Isuzu Motors hold a 44% and 15% stake of the
company respectively.
The company manufactures light commercial vehicles like
trucks, buses, school buses, ambulances, police personnel
carriers, water tankers and special vehicles. It exports its
products to countries
like Nepal, Zambia, Bangladesh, Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Ivor
y Coast, Rwanda, Seychelles, Syria, Jordan.

HISTORY
The company was incorporated in July 1983 with the name of Swaraj
Vehicles Limited. Swaraj Mazda Limited, at Chandigarh, India based
automobile company, was owned by the Sumitomo Corporation of Japan
and Punjab Tractors Limited of India, with a technical collaboration
with Isuzu and Mazda of Japan.

Joint venture and technical assistance agreement concluded between
Punjab Tractor Ltd., Mazda Motor Corporation and Sumitomo
Corporation. SVL renamed Swaraj Mazda Ltd.
In 2015, Mazda produced 1.5 million vehicles for global sales, the majority of
which (nearly 1 million) were produced in the company's Japanese plants,

49, WT-50 LCV commence. The development of the vendor base
undertaken as per approved by the government of India.

A light commercial vehicle (LCV) in the European Union, Australia, New Zealand is a


commercial carrier vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of no more than 3.5 metric tons (tonnes).
The LCV designation is also occasionally used in both Canada and Ireland (where the
term commercial van is more commonly used).
Qualifying light commercial vehicles include pickup trucks, vans and three-wheelers – all
commercially based goods or passenger carrier vehicles. The LCV concept was created as a

Profit Before Tax for FY 2002 crosses Rs. 100 Million mark. Dividend
raised to 25%.
2003
Profit Before Tax for FY-2003 grows 115% to Rs. 225 Million. Dividend
enhanced to 45%.
2004
Profit Before Tax for FY-2004 grows 44% to Rs. 324 Million. Dividend
enhanced to 70%.
2005
Cumulative sales crossed 86,000 vehicles. Bharat Stage-III emission
norms complied (both diesel & CNG). Dividend enhanced to 75%.
Punjab Tractors offloads 15% of equity stake in favor of Sumitomo
Corporation, Japan in June. Mazda Motor Corporation offloads 15% of
equity holding in favor of Sumitomo Corporation, Japan in August.
2006
Permission from Government for new manufacturing facilities at existing
site obtained in January. Dividend rate lowered to 55% due profit and
declined the Technical Assistance Agreement with Isuzu Motors signed
in June. Aggregate vehicles sale crosses 100,000 in August.
Construction of Buildings for vehicle expansion and new Bus Body Plant
taken up in August.
In June 2006, Swaraj Mazda entered a new Technical agreement with
Isuzu Motors, Japan.
2007
Dividend rate maintained at 55%.Trial Production of Isuzu Bus LT134
taken up in July.
2008
Dividend rate maintained at 55%. Highest-ever profit in the history of the
company. Launch of Ultra Luxury Buses in July.
2009
Sumitomo upped its stake in the company in 2009 by purchasing all of
Punjab Tractors' remaining shares, raising their stake to 53.5%[2]
In 2009, Swaraj Mazda started to roll out Luxury buses and medium-duty
trucks powered by Isuzu Engines from a new plant in Punjab. Plans are
to build multi-axle trucks, tractor units and refrigerated trucks within the
next three years. For an interim period, these vehicles were marketed
under the Swaraj Mazda Isuzu brand.[3]
In addition, Swaraj Mazda is moving to offer the Isuzu D-Max pickup.
Former associate company Punjab Tractors manufactured agricultural
tractors and combine harvesters under the Swaraj brand name before
selling 64.6% to Mahindra Tractors. In 2009, Mahindra and Swaraj
Mazda settled a dispute over the use of the Swaraj name, allowing
Swaraj Mazda to continue using the name for only two more years.
The Isuzu D-Max is a pickup truck manufactured since 2002 by Isuzu
Motors. The first and second-generation model shared its platform with
the Chevrolet Colorado. In Australasia between 2003 and 2008, the D-
Max was marketed as the Holden Rodeo, but then was relaunched as
the Holden Colorado. The Isuzu D-Max itself was also introduced during
2008, selling alongside the Holden-badged offering.

Mahindra Tractors is an Indian agricultural machinery manufacturer. Is


part of Mahindra & Mahindra.[2] In 2010, Mahindra became the world's
highest-selling tractor brand by volume. Mahindra's largest consumer
base is in India and China. Also have a growing market in North
America and Australia. The company is the largest tractor manufacturer
in India[3] and has the capacity to build 150,000 tractors a year.
2010
During the financial year 2009–10 the company had issued 3,984,946
equity share of Rs. 10 each at a premium of Rs. 190 per share on rights
basis to the Equity shareholders of the company in the ratio of 11 equity
shares for every 50 Equity shares held on the record date and raised Rs.
796989,000 for financing of Expansion project, repayment of loan taken
from Allahabad Bank (for Expansion Project) and for general corporate
purposes.
Swaraj Mazda Limited has informed the Exchange that at the Board
Meeting of the Company held on 1 October 2010, the Board of Directors
have decided to change the name of the company from Swaraj Mazda
Limited to SML Isuzu Limited. As of 2011 they no longer use the
"Swaraj" brand name.

1. Sartaj 59 XM :-

Feb 14, 2019: The SML Isuzu Sartaj 59 xm comes with a 3.5-litre, four
cylinder, BS-IV compliant engine, which can produce a maximum of 99.1
hp power and the peak torque is 310 Nm. The power is sent to the
wheels via a 5-speed manual gearbox. It has a fuel tank of 90 litres.
It comes with a deck body at the back and a tiltable sleeper cabin is
featured at the front. It is built on a wheelbase of 2,815 mm and the
GVW of the vehicle is 5,990 kilograms. Inside the cabin, it has
mechanical steering as standard, while there is an option to upgrade it to
power steering too. Other notable features of the truck are driver
information display and an adjustable seat.
The hydraulic brakes and parking brakes are also offered that provide
good stopping power. The inclusion of the ABS improves braking
efficiency.
Overview:- SML Isuzu SARTAJ 59 XM is a truck that falls under the
light commercial category of vehicles manufactured by the company.

version of In line direct injection turbo charger engine with intercooler.

CLUTCH:-
Clutch is a mechanical device used in the transmission system of a vehicle. It engages
and disengages the transmission system from the engine. It is fixed between the engine
and the transmission.

The power produced inside the engine cylinder is ultimately aimed to turn the wheels so
that the vehicle can move on the road. The reciprocating motion of the piston rotates a
crankshaft by rotating the flywheel through the connecting rod.
The circular movement of the crankshaft is now to be transferred to the rear wheels. It is
transmitted through the clutch, gearbox, universal points propeller shaft or driveshaft,
differential, and axles extending to the wheels.

With the help of all these parts, the use of engine power for the driving wheel is called
power transmission. The utilisation of engine power to the driving wheels through all
these parts is called power transmission.

The power transmission system is normally the same on all passenger cars and trucks.
But its design and arrangement may vary according to the method of drive and type of
transmission units.

Main Part of A Clutch


The main parts of a clutch are classified into three groups

1. Driving members
2. Driven members
3. Operating members.
Driving member

The driving member has a flywheel mounted on the crankshaft of the engine. The
flywheel is fixed to a cover which supports a pressure plate or driving disc, pressure
springs and releasing levers.

The whole assembly of the flywheel and the cover rotate all the times. The clutch
housing and the cover provided with an opening. From this opening, the heat is
evaporated generated by the friction during the clutch operation.

Driven member

The driven member has a disc or plate, called the clutch plate. It is free to slide alongside
on the splines of the clutch shaft. Driven member carries friction materials on both of its
surface. When a driven member is held between the flywheel and the pressure plate, it
helps to rotate the clutch shaft through the splines.

Operating member

The operating members have a foot pedal, linkage, release or throw-out bearing, release
leavers and the springs essential to ensure the proper operation of the clutch.

How Clutch Works in a Vehicle

Clutch is a mechanical device used in the transmission system of a vehicle. It


engages and disengages the transmission system from the engine. It is fixed
between the engine and the transmission.

 When the clutch is engaged, the power is transmitted from the


engine to the driving wheels through the transmission system and the
vehicle starts moving.
 When the clutch is disengaged, the power is not transmitted to the
rear or driving wheels and the vehicle stops while the engine is still
running.
 The clutch is disengaged when starting the engine, when stopping
the vehicle, when shifting the gears and when idling the engine.
 The clutch is engaged when the vehicle is to move and is kept
engaged when the vehicle is moving. Clutch also allows the continuous
taking up of the load.
Working Principle of Clutch
The clutch works on the principles of friction, when two friction surfaces are bought
in contact with each other and pressed they are united due to the friction between
them. If one is revolved, the other will also revolve.

The friction between the two surfaces depends upon the area of the surfaces, the
pressure applied upon them and coefficient of friction of the surface materials, The two
surfaces can be separated and brought into contact when required.

One surface is considered as a driving member and the other as a driven number. The
driving member is kept rotating when the driven member is brought in contact with the
driving member, it also starts rotating. When the driven member is separated from the
driving member it stops revolving. This is how a clutch operates.

he friction surfaces of the clutch are so designed that the driven member slips on the
driving member when the pressure is first applied. As pressure increases the driven
member is brought slowly to the speed of the driving member.

When the speeds of the members become equal, there’s no slip, the two members are
in firm contact and the clutch is now fully engaged.

The driving member of a clutch is the flywheel. It is mounted on the crankshaft the
driven member is the pressure plate. This is mounted on the transmission shaft. The
clutch plates are between the two members.

When the clutch is engaged, the engine to the rear wheels through the transmission
system. When the clutch is disengaged by pushing a clutch pedal, the engine is
disconnected from the transmission. Thus, the power stops flowing to the rear wheels
while the engine is still running

Clutch Plate or Disc

The clutch plate is the driving member of the clutch and is gripped between the flywheel
and the pressure plate. It is mounted on the clutch shaft through the splines. When it is
gripped, rotates the clutch shaft and the power is transmitted from the engine to the
transmission through the clutch.

A pressure plate consists of two sets of facing or friction material mounted on steel
cushion springs. The facing and cushion springs are riveted to a spring base disc and
spring retainer plate which are slotted for the insertion of the torsion spring.
These springs contact the hub flanges that fit between the spring retainer plate and the
disc and serve to transmit the twisting force applied to the facings to the splined hub.
The spring action serves to reduce torsional vibrations and shocks between the
engine and the transmission during clutch operation.

The facing and the plates rotate with respect to the hub to the limit of the compression
of the springs or to the limit of the spring stops.

When the clutch is engaged, the pressure on the facing compresses the cushion springs
sufficiently to cause the unit to decrease in thickness by 1 to 1.5 mm. This construction
helps to make engagement smooth and chatterless.

or belt-driven and gets cooled by either air or an engine cooling system. The
compressor(s) startup every time the engine is triggered, and the device loads and
unloads air which is pumped in and out of the reservoirs and the other two-cylinder
compressors.

Maintenance Tip: If the air compressor’s temperature is governed by an engine


cooling system, it may have its own, separate oil supply. If this is the case, ensure that
the operator and/or designated fleet team mechanic check the compressor’s oil levels
before the truck hits the road. Additionally, many compressors have their own filtration
system, which also must be serviced on a regular basis.
2. Reservoirs  
In the case of heavy truck and bus air brake systems, it’s the reservoirs that hold onto a sufficient amount
of compressed air, until the supply is required for braking. Note: drivers cannot control the amount of
air that they use when the air brakes are triggered; the amount solely depends on how much has
been circulated by the compressor.
In terms of design, reservoirs are pressure-rated tanks that feature special drain valves
called draincocks. When the draincocks are in the ‘open’ position, they drain themselves of any
moisture or pollutants that might compromise the integrity of the air.
Maintenance Tip: In order to guarantee that your reservoirs are in top shape, each must be drained
entirely at least once a day when in service.

3. Foot Valve
The foot valve, otherwise known as the treadle or the brake pedal, is the tool that
determines the volume of air pressure used. In this case, the volume is determined by
how hard the operator presses their foot on the foot valve.
When the compressed air is released through the brake system, it takes time for it to
be produced again through the compressor function (described above). That said, if
too much pressure is released in a short period of time, the entire system could fail.

Maintenance Tip: Supply your operators with proper training of the air brake system
before they are allowed to join your team. If they are not properly educated on brake
maintenance (i.e., they press and release the brakes often and unnecessarily) the air
brake system can incur permanent damage
4. Brake Chambers
Brake chambers, otherwise known as brake pots, are the devices that turn the compressed air
into mechanical force. It is through this mechanism that the brakes are triggered and the heavy truck
or bus is able to safely halt.
Each one of the brake chambers comes equipped with a specific pushrod stroke adjustment limit.
The chamber itself is held together by a clamp assembly that is specially made to regulate the
compressed air that is released into the chambers.

Maintenance Tip: Regular maintenance must be performed directly to the brake chambers as


dictated by the truck’s manual. This required maintenance is to guarantee that the pushrod stroke is
operating within normal range. If this maintenance is not performed, the entire air brake system could
fail.
5. Brake Shoes and Drums
By making use of friction, the brake shoes – or pads, depending on the make and model of the truck
– are forced outwards, thus initiating the air brake system.

A special brake lining material is attached to the brake shoes to help promote consistency. If the type
of lining is a good fit, it should also regulate heat that is created from the friction.

Maintenance Tip: Always replace the aforementioned lining when necessary. Also, make sure that
your mechanic frequently services other possible over-worked areas. These issues include distorted
drums, poor adjustment, or dirty linings.
Understanding these main components of air brake systems and how to properly maintain them is
helpful for preventive maintenance planning and the overall safety of your fleet.
