Both, Either, Neither

A. Definition

Both : The two, that one and the other one

Used to refers to two people or things.

Either : Any one of two

Used to refers to choosing one out of two options.

Neither : None of the two

We use neither when we like zero out of two options. We like none.

B. The Form/Patern and Examples

1. Both ... and ...

Both + Noun/Adjective/Verb-ing

Examples :

Maya can speak both English and French (Noun)

I am both tired and hungry (Adjective)

You can do both snorkeling and diving here (Verb/ing)


2. Either or, Neither nor

Formula Either/neither + noun (subject 1) + Either/Neither + noun (subject 1) +
or/nor + plural noun (subject 2) + or/nor + singular noun (subject 2) +
plural verb. singular verb.
Examples :

Either myself or your friends are the one who broke your toy. (Plural)

Either those girls or she is the one you want. (Singular)

Neither you nor they are the most important thing in my life. (Plural)

Neither the birds nor the bug is the one which will die first. (Singular)
