First of all, the virtual FGD Exploration & Production 2020 as the Pre-Event of 2020 International Convention on Indonesian
Upstream Oil & Gas has been carried out on 5-6 November 2020 with the theme “New Paradigm for More Oil and Gas
Production”.
Ladies and Gentleman,
Today I would like to summarize the Field Development Technology Division discussion session which is consist of 3 materials:

1. Optimization Field Development Strategy

• Mahakam as a production working area has challenges in maintaining stable production,

especially in the face of external factors such as oil prices are falling and the covid 19
pandemic.
So that a different solution and strategy is needed :
• The scenario for field development with a new approach is that it allows marginal development
projects to be implemented by combining these projects so that they support each other
economically. This is called Fields Development Optimization (OPLL).
• In addition to the OPLL scenario efforts are being made to optimize the costs for Capex and
Opex.
The goal of OPLL is supported by optimizing the cost of achieving the economy, both of the
government and Investors (PSC).

2. Mahakam Machine Learning Initiatives Projects: Why and How

Currently discovering new reserves is a big challenge especially the producing Working Area
such as Mahakam Contract Area. With the character of the Delta depositional environment it is a
challenge in finding geobody reservoir that can boost up reserves which have an impact on
production in the field. This is what makes Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) as one of the leading
oil and gas companies in Indonesia sees this trend as an opportunity by using data science and
analytics to develop in the energy industry, namely Machine Learning technology.
• The purpose of applying Machine Learning is to answer the complexity in Mahakam in the
subsurface aspect so that you can get benefits in terms of automation, optimization and
reducing cost in a short time.
Machine Learning Technology can identify hydrocarbons more accurately and faster from shallow
reservoir targets. This was applied to the seismic evaluation in the Tunu and Handil fields.

3. EOR Acceleration Process towards Indonesia 1 MMBOPD Vision

• Indonesia has huge EOR potential – some estimate 3 billion barrels. But despite this potential, only a handful of
companies are embarking on EOR.
• From a pure technical point of view, every reservoir is an EOR candidate.
• Mindset has to be changed, from “do we need EOR?” to “how are we going to make EOR successful?”.
• EOR is relatively expensive, but it becomes more expensive as it’s delayed.
• Delay EOR will cause more oil left in reservoir because it is more difficult to be recovered.
• Recovery considerations including EOR has to start from day one of a green field development.
• Simultaneous optimization of “production” and “recovery” has to be the objective all the time.
• Frequently people keep using analogs (especially from the 70’s and 80’s) for taking a decision on EOR, which actually
wouldn’t mean anything for today’s decision.
• With evolution of multi-domain technologies and a fresh new approaches, EOR projects can be significantly more
successful than ever before.
• There is still opportunity to accelerate of LTP EOR project timeline such as :
- 1st Stage Fullfield Scale Minas C-EOR in 2024 - Full scale Batang SF EOR in 2024
- Full scale Tanjung C-EOR in 2027 - Full scale Sukowati CO2 EOR in 2027
