DiscussionAre they ever going to do another book on magic?
(self.mutantsandmasterminds)
I’ve noticed that 3e has been leaning a lot towards the cosmic and scientific sides
of superpowers, but not really the mystical side. We got the cosmic handbook and
the gadget guides, but only the supernatural handbook for dm’s and nothing really
for players. In 2e they had the book of magic, and I’m sincerely hoping they do
that again. Do you people think they will?

If you're an artificer, you'll build artifacts which perform magic for you. This
means lots of Devices and maybe a few ranks of Variable with the Slow flaw.
If you're a blood mage, perhaps your magic requires you to hurt yourself to cast
your greatest effects, and your more powerful powers have the Side Effect flaw,
forcing you to make a Toughness check when you use them.
If you bind spirits to your service at the beginning of each day and they're
released each time you cast a spell, then perhaps your greater powers have the
Unreliable flaw, and can only be used a limited number of times before they need to
be recharged.
If you channel the power of nature, then maybe your powers work best when you're in
nature, at the highest rank or three of each power has a Limit preventing you from
using it in a civilized area. Meanwhile, you have Favored Environment: Wilderness
to effectively make your powers better in nature, so you'll be a little better than
most in the wilderness and a little worse elsewhere.
If your magic is granted by a god, then maybe you have a power which simply
involves praying for a miracle - a Variable effect with the Uncontrolled flaw and
Unreliable forcing it to be recharged after use through some level of religious
devotion. Essentially, you get an effect chosen by the DM to fit your current
problem.
If your magic requires you to have a high-level understanding of what you're doing
at each step, maybe you have a rank of Check Required: Expertise (Magic) on each
power, requiring you to roll skill checks to cast them.

Honestly, my only M&M desire regarding magic is probably something that would have
made a better sidebar in the Power Profile than part of a book, how to limit the
versatility of magic. They kind of touch on that by suggesting traditions, and the
idea that magic may involve additional Complications where whipping out a new power
is going to bring you to the notice of Entities who may seek payback for you
dipping into their domain without purchasing their Protection Plan by learning the
right wards.
