Who Is The “Troubler Of

Israel”?
SEPTEMBER 29, 2017  BY PREACHERPOLLARD
Neal Pollard

Ahab was the most wicked king in Israel’s history (1 Kings 16:30). To top it off, he
was married to perhaps the most immoral woman revealed to us during the time of
the divided kingdom in the Old Testament. Her name, Jezebel, is still somewhat
infamous today. She destroyed the prophets of the Lord (1 Kings 18:4). The
prophets who survived feared for their lives because of Ahab (18:9). Instead,
Jezebel kept a stable of false prophets, 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of
Asherah (18:19). Read this section of 1 Kings and the first nine chapters of 2 Kings
to get the full flavor of who this notorious couple was.

How ironic that when Elijah appears to Ahab before the prophet’s infamous
confrontation with the false prophets on Mount Carmel, Ahab’s first words to him
were, “Is this you, you troubler of Israel?” (18:17). There was controversy, division,
problems, and trouble in the land, but Ahab’s narrative was distorted. Ahab was like
a reckless drunk driver weaving in and out of traffic and blaming a law-abiding
pedestrian for being in his way on the sidewalk. Elijah was not the troubler of Israel
for daring to oppose the false ways of Ahab and Jezebel. He was doing exactly what
God wanted him to do!

In our present, lawless age, there are so many “prophets” who come along with a
message appealing to right ideas like peace, grace, unity, and love. Many of them
package themselves in the garments of relevance, using our culture as their props
and stage. The causes célèbre which our age reveres, some of which are
diametrically opposed to the doctrine, ethics, and morality outlined in Scripture, are
pushed at God’s people—who are shamed and made to feel unrighteous if they dare
protest what is said. In some circles, it is asserted that anyone teaching that the
Bible is authoritative, contains a pattern, and is God’s objective truth for all times, is
Pharisaical, consumed with self-righteousness, hateful, mean-spirited, and divisive.
In short, that they are “troublers of Israel.”

As a quick side-note, there are some who do press their personal proclivities,

traditions, and convictions as divine truth. This is as accursed a thing as seeking to
nullify what God has bound in heaven (cf. Mat. 16:19; Rev. 22:18-19). Such folks
manufacture trouble rather than trouble people by faithfully sharing God’s Word.
These occupy unenviable ground, in view of the end of all things.

Yet, anyone who conscientiously tries to follow God’s blueprint for how to share His
truth (Eph. 4:15; 2 Tim. 2:24-26; Col. 4:6), who takes care to handle Scripture
accurately (2 Tim. 2:15), is going to invariably encounter the Ahabs, Jezebels,
Baalites, and Asherahists. Teach the singular, undenominational nature of the church (Eph.
4:4), the role of women in the church (1 Tim. 2:9-12), the essentiality of baptism in God’s
saving plan (Acts 2:38), God’s plan for marriage and sexuality (Mat. 19:1-9; Heb. 13:4; Rom.
1:26-27), and the like, and it will come. The Ahabs will label you the troublemaker and the
source of the problem.

In what may sound dark and grim, Paul warns Timothy that difficult times will come (2 Tim.
3:1). He speaks of men immoral in nature and inaccurate in message who succeed with the
weak and impulsive (3:6), who themselves are “always learning and never able to come to
the knowledge of the truth” (3:7), who in fact “oppose the truth, men of depraved mind,
rejected in regard to the faith” (3:8). Ultimately, they will not carry the day (3:9). But they will
always have their eager followers who “accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to
their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths”
(4:3-4).

Suppress the victim mentality if you are trying to be an Elijah in this Ahab society. On the job,
at home, in the community, within the religious community at large, and even at times within
the church, “preach the word” (2 Tim. 4:2). Do it with great patience and instruction, as Paul
counsels. Don’t be a troubler in God’s eyes, but know that you will be seen as one in the eyes
of some in this world. Keeping company with Elijah is not a bad thing.
“Who Is The “Troubler Of Israel”?”
Who is the troublemaker of Israel?
When, some time in the 860s BC, King Ahab of Israel called the prophet Elijah a troublemaker, you can see
his point. For it was through Elijah, and at his word, that a great drought had come upon the land.

Ahab and the prophets

Because of this, Ahab refers to him as "the troubler of Israel" (1 Kings 18:17). This encounter ends with
Elijah's victory over the prophets of Baal in a contest held for the sake of Ahab and the Israelites, to bring
them into repentanc
Is it you the Troubler of Israel?
When he saw Elijah, he said to him, "Is that you, you troubler of Israel?" "I have not made trouble for
Israel," Elijah replied. "But you and your father's family have. You have abandoned the LORD's commands
and have followed the Baals.

Why does Ahab call Elijah the disturber of Israel?

Prophet from the north, called the people of Israel unfaithful because they had other gods. Prophet from
the north, urged people to turn from their sinful ways back to God. Was called the disturber of Israel, Warned
of years of drought to come. King of Israel, worship false idols, called Elijah the disturber of Israel.

O thou that troubleth my Israel, the God Elijah shall trouble you today in the name of Jesus.

esus was speaking to His disciples. They wanted to know when He would come again, and He told
them that first there would be a time of great tribulation. It is most commonly referred to as the 1260
day period of tribulation. It is mentioned over and over again in the prophecies. See Revelation 11:3,
Revelation 12:6, Revelation 13:5, and Daniel 7:25. Now this 1260 day/year prophecy happened
during the new covenant—after the cross. For everything in the new covenant, there is a type in the
old covenant, and there was a type for this. The old covenant type was during the time of Jezebel,
Ahab and Elijah. We will study this time period.

The time period in the old covenant was 1260 days, just like in the new covenant. It is so important
that it is mentioned twice in the New Testament. “I tell you truly many widows were in Israel in the
days of Elijah when the heavens were shut up three years and six months.” Luke 4:25. “Elijah was a
man with a nature like ours and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain and it did not rain on the
land for three years and six months.” James 5:17. This gives the exact time—1260 days. During this
time, there was a great famine throughout all the land, because there was no rain. Rain is a symbol
of the Holy Spirit. No matter how well things may be going, if the Holy Spirit withdraws because of
sin, there is a spiritual famine.

Before we study the time of Elijah, and how it relates to our day; notice this description of God’s
professed people—His church, during the 1260 year period of tribulation in the new covenant.
“These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and his feet like fine brass: I
know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more
than the first. Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel,
who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and
eat things sacrificed to idols. And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not
repent. Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great
tribulation unless they repent of their deeds. I will kill her children with death, and all the churches
shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you
according to your works. Now to you I say, and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this
doctrine, who have not known the depths of Satan, as they say, I will put on you no other burden. But
hold fast what you have till I come. And he who overcomes, and keeps my works until the end, to him
I will give power over the nations. ‘He shall rule them with a rod of iron; They shall be dashed to
pieces like the potter’s vessels.’ ” Revelation 2:18–27.

This is the period of great tribulation, the 1260 years during the dark ages. What was the problem?
“Jezebel” was the head of the church. Now let us look back to Elijah’s time. Who was the king? Ahab
was the king, but who was in control of Ahab? Was the Holy Spirit in control of Ahab? No, Jezebel
was in control of Ahab. Consequently, the professed church (Jezebel) was in control of the state
(Ahab.) Jezebel was the leader of their church organization and she had ultimate control over the
state and it produced a period of great tribulation for God’s people. What happened to anybody if
they would not go along with the program of the church organization? Well, they got destroyed.

During this three years and six months, a man named Obadiah was able to save a hundred
prophets, by putting fifty each, in a couple of caves and giving them bread and water. But it was a
time of great tribulation and many of God’s true people were killed. A proper understanding of this
story answers many questions and accusations that people are using today against God’s
messengers. We will go over some points used against rebuke of sin, and let the experience of Elijah
give us the answer.

What Would Elijah Say?

1. Did God by divine arrangement, denominate the children of Israel as His special
denominated people?
Answer: Yes, He did.
2. Were they called by a divinely appointed name and were they God’s chosen people?
Answer: Yes, they were.
3. Was their church organization organized by divine appointment and therefore, was it
God’s chosen and organized church? History gives the answer.
Answer: Yes, it was. However, when the leadership decided to try to fight and destroy God’s
people, and to go contrary to the historic truths of the organization, you cannot say anymore that the
leadership had divinely constituted authority. They were no longer to be followed. In fact, if you
followed the authority of the “church leadership” you were separated from God.
4. Would you say that the authority of the leaders was duly authorized or constituted
church authority?
Answer: No. Elijah did not say that. In Elijah’s day, Jezebel was the ultimate leader. She had a big
organization; over eight-hundred associates that were leading out with her. But, Jezebel exercised
an usurped authority.
5. Is it not wrong to have a school or church not under the authority of the system that
originally had been set up by God himself?
Answer: Elijah would say just the opposite. If the church structure asks you to do something
contrary to the word of God, it is wrong for you to allow yourself to be under their authority. At Steps
to Life we tried to work with church organization, but we came in to existence as a separate
independent ministry because we were asked to do something that was contrary to our conscience.
That is how it was for Elijah’s ministry, and those little home churches, out in the desert that were
faithful, had to flee for their lives. The ones that had not gotten killed were, no doubt, called all kinds
of names because they were not going along with the program.

2 (1Ki 18:17-24) And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel? And he
answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD,
and thou hast followed Baalim. Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four
hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table. So Ahab sent unto all the children of
Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel. And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye
between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.
Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.
Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood,
and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: And call ye on the name of
your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people
answered and said, It is well spoken.

3 a man subject to like passions as we are (Jas 5:17) Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly
that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.

4 I. The Defiance of Ahab to judgment

5 (1Ki 18:17) And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?

6 A.His lack of COMPREHENDING to the judgment

7 And Ahab called Obadiah, (1Ki 18:2-6) And Elijah went to shew himself unto Ahab. And there was a sore famine in Samaria. And
Ahab called Obadiah, which was the governor of his house… And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of
water, and unto all brooks: peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts. So
they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by
himself.

8 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath (Rom 2:2-5) But we are
sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things. And thinkest thou this, O man, that
judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? Or despisest thou the
riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? But
after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous
judgment of God;

9 blasphemed the name of God And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of
their deeds (Rev 16:8-11) And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men
with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and
they repented not to give him glory. And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of
darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain, And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and
repented not of their deeds.

10 (2Ch 36:15) And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he had
compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: (2Ch 36:16) But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his
words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

11 (Rom 11:25) For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits;
that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

12 A.His lack of COMPREHENDING to the judgment B.His CHARGES brought to the Man of God

13 (Luk 23:4-5) Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man. And they were the more fierce,
saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place. (Act 16:19-20) And when
her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the
rulers, And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,

14 (Act 17:6) And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that
have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

15 (Amo 7:10-13) Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in
the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words. For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword,
and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land. Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away
into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there: But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king's
chapel, and it is the king's court.

16 I. The Defiance of Ahab to judgment II. The Declaration of Elijah to Ahab

17 And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house (1Ki 18:18) And he answered, I have not troubled
Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.

18 A. Elijah's CHARGES against Ahab and his father

19 (1Ki 16:25) But Omri wrought evil in the eyes of the LORD, and did worse than all that were before him. (1Ki 16:26) For he
walked in all the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin, to provoke the LORD God of
Israel to anger with their vanities.

20 A. Elijah's CHARGES against Ahab and his father B.His CONTEMPT to the commandments of the Lord

21 when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness (Isa 26:9) With my soul have I
desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the
inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, (Psa 119:11) Thy word have I hid in mine
heart, that I might not sin against thee. taking heed thereto according to thy word (Psa 119:9) BETH. Wherewithal shall a young
man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
22 Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice (1Sa 15:22) And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and
sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD (1Sa 15:23) For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as
iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

23 I. The Defiance of Ahab to judgment II. The Declaration of Elijah to Ahab III.The Demand of Elijah to all of Israel

24 (1Ki 18:19-24) Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and
fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table. So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and
gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel. And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two

and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and
said, It is well spoken.

25 A. God’s total CONTROL of all humanity

26 (Pro 21:1) The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.

27 (Exo 4:21) And the LORD said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before
Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go.

28 LORD stirred up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines (2Ch 21:16) Moreover the LORD stirred up against Jehoram the
spirit of the Philistines, and of the Arabians, that were near the Ethiopians:

29 the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia (Ezr 1:1) Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the
LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a
proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,

30 A. God’s total CONTROL of all humanity B.Elijah’s CHALLENGE to the nation

31 (1Ki 18:19-24) Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and
fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table.

32 (2Ki 17:41) So these nations feared the LORD, and served their graven images, both their children, and their children's
children: as did their fathers, so do they unto this day.

33 (Jos 24:15) And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which
your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me
and my house, we will serve the LORD.

34 (Isa 8:13) Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. (1Pe 3:15) But sanctify the
