P R Q 3 2 3 2 END OF COURSE PROJECT

PROBLEM STATEMENT:

It is desired to develop a simulation program to calculate the behavior of an evaporation system, for
which a triple effect evaporator will be simulated to concentrate 100 000 lb / h of sugar solution at
150ºF from 14 to 50ºBrix. Live steam is available at 150 lb / in2g and water at 75 ° F. The live vapor
at the first effect will be 25 psi and the vacuum at the last effect will be maintained at 24 in. Hg.
From the first effect, vapors are released at 15 lb / in2g and will be partially compressed by a thermo-
compressor that uses 150 lb / in2g steam and fed to the second evaporator as live steam. Assuming
equal surfaces for the three evaporators, parallel flows and an approximation of 5ºF in the condenser,
estimate a) the total live vapor required in the first effect, b) The amount of steam at 150lb / in2 g; c)
the economy, d) the water required in the condenser, e) surface required assuming UD = 500, 300
and 150 for the three effects.

WORK:
a) Develop the equations to estimate the behavior of the system.
b) Prepare a diagram that includes an executive program, a basis for calculating
physicochemical and thermodynamic properties.
c) Select the appropriate numerical method.
d) Carry out the corresponding programming in MATLAB.
e) Represent the behavior of the system, plotting temperature and concentrations in each stage
of the process.

The program should allow the entry of values and give the option to change the values indicated.
The presentation of the work includes a CD with the program as well as the corresponding
instructions for its use.
The work will be done in groups, two similar programs will not be accepted.
