Slug: Book review

Name of the book: Origami in Action

Author: Robert J. Lang

Published on: 15 May 1997

Genre: Crafts and Arts

Synopsis: This book starts from the basics of how to make square from rectangle which
everyone knows and slowly explains the origami terms like white side, color side, raw edge, top,
far layer, spine etc. It also explains origami folds like valley fold, mountain fold, unfold which
are the easiest and other complex folds like spread sink, open sink, pleat, petal fold etc. This
helps a beginner in origami to understand the concepts more easily. They also help them to read
the origami diagrams.
Then comes the models. Going by the name, all the models shown in this book does some action.
It starts with the easiest and goes to the hardest. Some examples of the models that you find in
this book are Stumming guitarist, Fiddling Bassist, Kicking Otter, Wagging-tail Doggie,
Flapping Lovebirds, and the easiest Traditional Flapping Bird.

Why is it worth reading: I have tried many models in the book like Flapping butterfly, flapping
crane, folding knife, barking wolf, Cootie catcher / Fortune teller, gliding butterfly, Stumming
guitarist, Fiddling Bassist, Kicking Otter, Tyrannosaurus Rex, and flasher.
What I like about the book is that the instructions are easier to follow, and the models never fail.
It would have been good if the author covered all the folds in origami like closed wrap. I have
spotted some mistakes in the instructions. For example, in Stumming guitarist, step 15, we would
have to pull out a hard paper but, in the book, it is written loose paper.

Iconic quote: As it is an arts and crafts book, there is no such quotes.
