movement displaying
common features and adhering
to the same principles, though
they reflected the intellectual
and spiritual crisis of their age,
the difficult transition from the
Renaissance to the modern age.
Metaphysical Poetry

Metaphysical Poetry” was a term coined by an 18th-century critic. Strictly


speaking, “metaphysical” concerns with the fundamental problems of the
nature snd of the universe and man’s function or place in life. In literature
Metaphysical is a type of poetry written during the first three-quarters of
the 17th century.
Metaphysical Poets

The Metaphysical poets cannot be considered as a real movement

they reflected the intellectual and spiritual crisis of their age, the
difficult transition from the Renaissance to the modern age.
Conceit is an intellectual and unusual type of metaphor or
simile.

The images are logical and intellectual rather than


emotional. Images taken from field of knowledge , science,
geography, philosophy, chemistry, astronomy

Wit had a central importance, it may combine sensitivity,


cleverness and knowledge. It was the ability to make up
unusual metaphors and images and arrange them in an
unexpected way so as to surprise the reader. (Conceit)

Paradox: a statement that is apparently contradictory.


The legacy of Metaphysical Poetry

This group of poets was largely forgotten during the 18th century, when a
taste for clarity prevailed. Their reputation was revived by the essays of the
modern poet T.S.Eliot (1888-1965), who understood the seriousness of their
art, their spirit of revolt, their intellectualism and their affinities with modern
interests.
