Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activities

1) Prayer

Pupils, can we all please stand up for the prayer?

Yes Teacher!

Most high, glorious God, Most high, glorious God,

Enlighten the darkness of my heart. Enlighten the darkness of my heart.
Give me true faith, certain hope, perfect Give me true faith, certain hope, perfect

I may carry out your Holy and true command. I may carry out your Holy and true command.
Amen Amen
2) Greetings

Good morning Everyone! How are you all feeling

today?
Good Morning Teacher! We are all feeling great today,
Thank you!

3) Classroom Management

Well that is good to hear, but before you all sit down
please kindly arrange your chairs first.
Okay Teacher!

4) Checking of Attendance

Is there anyone among your classmates who is absent

for today?
None, All of us are present for today Teacher!
Very well then!

B. Review

Let us first have a review of our previous lesson.

Can anyone recall what we have discussed and learned

yesterday?
Yes Teacher! Our lesson yesterday was all about the
properties of matter in which we identify different
materials that are useful or harmful.
Very good! That is correct! Now then, Can anyone give
me some examples of materials which are useful?
Yes Ma’am! Some examples of useful materials are
wood, plastic, paper and glass.
Good! Now can you give me examples of materials
which are harmful?
The examples of materials which are harmful are a
knife, lighter, pesticide and toilet cleaner which
contains acid.
Correct! Now that we have recalled our previous lesson
we shall now proceed to our lesson for today. Are you
all ready?

Yes Teacher, We are ready!

B. Establishing a purpose for the Lesson
Motivation:
Look at these three pictures.
What do you notice about them?

That is correct! What about the second picture?

That is also correct! What about the last picture?

The first picture seems to be about biodegradable

Very Good! materials because it is often the sign we see when we
recycle things.
C. Presenting examples/ instances of the new lesson
I have here pictures of materials which shows the
chemical properties of matter which are combustibility, We think the second picture is about fire and things
flammability and biodegradability. Categorize them to that can set other things on fire because it says
their rightful category by attaching them to the three flammable.
manila papers which say COMBUSTIBILITY,
FLAMMABILITY and BIODEGRADABILITY. The third picture is related with the second one and it
may be about things that easily burn because it says
( The teacher will then show the pictures) combustible.
( The teacher will then post the three manila papers in
the board)

COMBUSTIBILITY FLAMMABILITY BIODEGRADABILITY

( The teacher will then ask some pupils to attach the

pictures to the three category of chemical properties of
matter)
D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new
skills #1
( The pupils who are called will attach the pictures to
We know that matter refers to all the objects and the manila papers on the blackboard)
materials around us and in studying its different kinds
we use observation and comparison to distinguish one
material to another. Then we look for characteristics
that are not similar in the two objects or two materials
being observed and compared. These characteristics
that make one matter distinct from one another is called
its properties.

There are two kinds of classification for the properties

of matter and these are physical properties and
chemical properties.

In our lesson for today we will only be focusing on the

chemical properties of matter.

Is that clear my dear pupils?

Very well then!

The chemical properties of matter are properties that

are not readily observed immediately like physical
properties and the composition of these materials need Yes Teacher!
to change first before a property can be observed.
Chemical property of a material is most evident when a
certain material chemically reacts first with another
material.

Can you tell me the three chemical properties that we

will tackle for this lesson?
Very Good!
Yes Ma’am! The three chemical properties that we will
The first example of chemical property of matter is tackle for today are Combustibility, Flammability and
Combustibility. This is the ability of a material to burn Biodegradability.
or the measure of how easily a substance will set on
fire through fire or combustion. Some examples of
materials which possess this chemical property are
alcohol, wood, sawdust, dried leaves, paper, wax,
gasoline, kerosene, oil, thinner and varnish.

The second example is Flammability in which it is the

ability of a material to ignite or catch fire easily. Some
examples of this are alcohol, gasoline, petrol, ethanol,
rubber, methanol, acetone, paper and
nitromethane.

It is important to know that some materials are both

combustible and flammable like alcohol and gasoline.
However, not all combustible materials are flammable,
For example is a big chunk of wood it can be burn
when subjected to high amount of heat but will not
catch fire easily unless you expose it longer so that it
will start burning.

Any questions regarding these two chemical property

of matter?

That is a very good question. Yes Ma’am! What is the difference between the two so
that we can know which materials are combustible or
flammable or both because they seem to be very
The difference between combustibility and similar.
flammability are flammable and combustible materials
differ based on the temperatures they must be
exposed to in order to catch fire. Specifically,
flammables will ignite at lower temperatures than
combustibles when exposed to an ignition source and
this specific temperature, also known as a flash point,
is what separates flammables and combustibles.

The Flash Point is the lowest temperature at which

hazardous materials will generate vapors and ignite if
exposed to an ignition source. These temperatures vary
from material to material, but there are certain flash
point thresholds that separate flammables from
combustibles.

The Flash Points for which flammable and combustible

materials differ are flammable materials are considered
flammable if it has a flash point of any temperature
below 37.8 ºC while combustible materials are
considered combustible if it has a flash point higher
than 37.8 ºC and below 93.3 ºC.

This the reason why these materials need to be

disposed of properly because they react readily and
easily when exposed to extreme heat but nonetheless
these materials are also useful in some ways but proper
handling must be done when using them.

The last chemical property that we will tackle is

Biodegradability. It is when some materials can
decompose or decay through the actions of bacteria and
organisms and when these materials decompose, their
particles return to the soil and this ability of a material
to decompose is known as biodegradability. Some
examples of this are fruit and vegetable peelings,
plant clippings, and dead plants and animals.

These biodegradable materials can then be put into

good use by burying these materials in a shallow hole
dug in the ground and then covered with topsoil known
as a compost pit. This is called Composting in which
when these buried materials in the pit are gradually
broken down by earthworms and microorganisms into
a compost it can now be used as a natural fertilizer
which are good for planted crops.

Do you think biodegradability is important for our

environment?

Very Good!
Yes we believe that it is important in our environment
E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new because these natural process it helps to remove
skills #2 organic waste that can be harmful to our ecosystem.
( The teacher will write the activity and instruction on
the blackboard about the three chemical property of
matter and give the pupils ample amount of time to
answer)
Activity
Direction: Get a one whole sheet of paper and
enumerate the three chemical property of matter that
we have discussed and explain the differences and
similarities between these three.

( The teacher will then collect the papers of the pupils

after they have finished the activity) ( The pupils will then answer the activity within the
given ample amount of time)
F. Developing Mastery ( Leads to formative
assessment)

( The teacher will present a power point presentation

of pictures of materials that are combustible,
flammable or biodegradable)

Now my dear pupils, I have a power point presentation

here which shows different objects and materials. As I
flash these pictures on the screen identify which
chemical property they possess.

G. Generalization

Why do you think is it important to know the different COMBUSTIBILITY

chemical property of a matter?

It is important to know because all the things that we

Very Good! see in our world is matter thus it is necessary for us to

know the different characteristics of the objects or
