Exercise 1 For an investment of $4700, how long should it take to grow to $6000 when interest rate
compounded annually at 5.5%? Then if your investment is $ 4500 for eight years and grow to $6525
when the annual rate of interest is i %. Calculate i. Determine the number of years it will take for the
investment to double in value if the interest is calculated four times annually as compound interest.
(Hint: these are just independent cases).
Exercise 2 Determine the domain of the following functions and the limits associated. Interpret the
result:
1 f(x)= X2 – 2X + 1
X+2
(x+1)2
X2- 2x + x + 2
(x+1)2
X(x-2) + (x+ 2)
X =-2 x=2
2 f(x)= 2x2 + 5x – 3
2x2+5x-3 = 0
(2x-1)(x+3)= 0
X= 1/2, x= -3
3 f(x)= in (-2x+1) = 0
x
(-2+1) (1x1) = 0
X+1
X = 1, -2
4 f(x)= 2 +x + e-x
=
(e-x+x+2) = 0
={(e-xx)+3}
= 3 + (x+1)
Exercise 3
f (x) = 3 – x +e-x
= (e-x-x+3)
= {(x+1)2-4}
= 4-(x+1)2
Exercise 4
1- Find the minima and maxima of the function f(x)=3x 4−4x3+5 on the interval [−2,3]
2- The cost per hour of fuel to run a locomotive is v2/25 dollars, where v is speed, and other costs
are $100 per hour regardless of speed. What is the speed that minimizes cost per mile?
1. f(x)= f(x)=3x4−4x3+5 [-2,3]
V= 25x100= 2500
V= 2500/hour
