EE303 Problem Set #1

Problem 1.

In the presence of a steady current filament carrying I 0 ( Amp ) along the z-axis, a square-shaped
conducting loop with side length b ( meters ) and total resistance R ( ohms ) starts moving at time
t = 0 within the y = 0 plane in the direction of unit vector n̂ with constant acceleration
a0 ( m / s 2 ) . (Remember that acceleration vector a is the time derivative of velocity vector v .)
Initial conditions are specified as v ( t = 0 ) = 0, X ( t = 0 ) = x0 , Z ( t = 0 ) = z0 where
( X ( t ),0 , Z ( t )) are the coordinates of the corner #1 of the loop at a given time t. Find the induced
voltage vind and induced current iind in the loop, indicating the current direction, for the
following cases:

a) For n̂ = â x b) For n̂ = â z

P.S. : To visualize the terminals associated with , you may imagine that the loop is cut at an
arbitrary point to create two terminals and the resistance R is connected between these two terminals.
Problem 2.
A very thin metal rod of length L meters is placed on the 0 plane with one end (call end 1) is
pinned at the origin. The rod is rotating about the z-axis in counter-clockwise direction at the
speed of N revolutions per minute as described in the figure.
Determine the induced emf (2 is the other free end of the rod) if there exists a magnetic field
in the medium
