f ) The Doppler effect (named after Christian Doppler) is the change in the pitch (frquency) of
the sound from a source (s) as heard by an observer (o) when one or both are in motion. If we
assume both, the soruce and the obersver, are moving in the same direction, the relationship
is:
0 v − v0
f = fa
v − vs
where f 0 is the perceived pitch frequency by the observer, fa the actual pitch of the source,
v = 343m/s the speed of sound, vo is the speed of the observer and vs is the speed of the
source. Suppose that you are traveling down the road at 50 kmh and you hear an ambulance
(with siren) coming toward you from the rear. The actual pitch of the siren is 600Hz.
1) Draw the rational function asociated with the problem in terms of the ambulance speed.
2) If f 0 = 620Hz, find the speed of the ambulance.
