1.

Which is likely to be more frequently found in rocks: fossils of very old

sea creatures or very old land creatures? Explain your answer.

The old sea creatures are the frequently found in rocks. It is beyond
dispute among geologists that on every continent we find fossils of sea creatures
in rock layers which today are high above sea level. For example, we find marine
fossils in most of the rock layers in Grand Canyon.

2. What factors make it more likely that an animal will be preserved as a

fossil?

The hard parts of organisms or animals, such as bones, shells, and teeth
have a better chance of becoming fossils than do softer parts.

3. A scientist wants to determine the age of a rock. The rock contains an

index fossil and an ancient relative of a living fossil. Which fossil will be
more useful for dating the rock, and why?

The index fossil is more useful for dating the rocks, because it is a
distinctive fossils used to establish and compare the relative ages of rock layers
and the fossils they contain. An index fossil, must be widely distributed and
represent a type of organism that existed only briefly. Example, if the same
index fossil is found in two widely separated rock layers, the rock layer probably
similar in age.
