TOPIC: Architectural Regeneration of a Juvenile Correctional Facility

HYPOTHESIS: Architectural remedies can be the solution for the betterment of
Juvenile Correctional Facilities
INTRODUCTION: India is in a poor state regarding the infrastructure for the
reformation of juveniles and most of them are ill equipped to maintain the kind of
environment and basic needs an “incarcerative” space should provide.
The aim of the study is to formulate a set of guidelines for the design of juvenile
correctional facilities based on analysis of such institutes based on fixed parameters.
OBJECTIVES: The initial objective is to study Juvenile Correctional Facilities, its
history, its penal system and architectural trends in a worldwide context. Then the
next step is to identify the contextual, spatial and security parameters required to
analyze a Juvenile Correctional Centre and to analyze the present examples of
Juvenile Correctional Facility so as to identify the problems in it. The final goal is to
provide architectural interventions as solutions to these problems and to compile a
series of guidelines for the proper design of a Juvenile Correctional Centre
SCOPE: The research will not go into details of security systems, detail of
reformation and psychiatric programming but will include a general outlook in all
fields.
DATA COLLECTION: Literature Case Studies (Books, journals, web), Live Case
Studies (Observational notes, sketches, interviews), Questionnaires, Surveys
PARAMETERS FOR ANALYSIS:
i) Context – Physical – Appearance, Approach & Visibility, Surroundings
- Non-Physical – Topography, Climate, Culture
ii) Spatial Parameters – Layout & Zoning, Built v/s Open, Occupancy & Activities,
Volumetric Analysis
iii) Safety and security – Personal Safety, Building Safety, Site Safety
RESULT OF STUDY: The result of the study recommends how the present state of
Juvenile Correctional Facilities in India in terms of habitability, infrastructure and its
functionality of it being an “incarcerative space” can be improved with architectural
remedies based of aforementioned parameters and result in the overall betterment of
the institute.
