n 1984, Ivan Reitman directed the blockbuster film
Ghostbusters with a star cast including Sigourney Weaver,
Bill Murray, and Dan Akroyd. Then in 1989, Reitman
directed the sequel to the film. The story seemed to end there,
but that was far from true.
Now, nearly 40 years later, Ivan Reitman’s son, Jason
Reitman continued his father’s story with his film
Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The third installment of this trilogy
does not involve the 2016 Ghostbusters starring Kristen Wiig,
Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and many more big names.
Afterlife picks up the 1984 story in today’s setting, following
the daughter of original ghostbuster Egon Spengler, who was
played by the late Harold Ramis.
The movie was originally set for release in 2020, but just
like every other movie that year, was delayed. The film is
currently only in theaters, not on any streaming services.
Viewers who want a movie that deeply appreciates the original
will be pleased, and so will viewers who want to see a fresh
take on ghostbusters. Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace will
please the younger audiences, adding a nice teenage aspect to
the story, and showing how it is difficult to be taken seriously
as a kid these days.
While this movie has many aspects that make it an
enjoyable watch, one of its standout qualities is it’s musical
score. Rob Simonsen scored this film, and he did a
phenomenal job. The music drove the film much like the
original two Ghostbusters films. Simonsen expertly threaded
all scenes of the movie with the score, even the scenes that
were less important.
Watching the original two Ghostbusters movies is not
required to see this one. Reitman handled the exposition of
this film beautifully. Audiences will not feel lost in the story
and will be able to follow it easily.
This is not a groundbreaking film on par with something
like Shawshank Redemption, nevertheless, Ghostbusters:
Afterlife is, simply put, a good movie, there is not anything to
really criticize about
the film, its goal
is to continue the
Ghostbusters storyline
in a new way, while
still respecting
the original, and
it delivers. It is
a fun watch for
all members of
the family, and a
nostalgia filled ride
for those who saw the
original when it first
released. So, go see
Ghostbusters: Afterlife
in theaters.
