2. What is the name of Rizal’s mother? Teodora Alonso Realonda y Quintos
3. What is Rizal’s full name? José Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda
4. What could be the reason why Jose used Rizal as his surname when all his siblings used Mercado?
Being a close friend to the three friars who were executed, commonly known as GomBurZa, Paciano
Mercado decided to make Jose use the Rizal surname in order to protect him. By doing so, the
Spaniards will not know that they are connected as brothers.

5. Why did Rizal get “poor” grades in the University of Santo Tomas?
Scholars studying on Rizal’s life have stated that possible reasons for his poor grades in the
University of Santo Tomas. Perhaps he was not really that good in medicine because his expertise
was in Letters and Arts. It could be that Rizal did not like the education system or the environment
there, in other words, he was unhappy there. Lastly, Rizal was distracted by his youth.
