How an ATM works

An ATM (automated teller machine), also called a cash machine, is simply a data
terminal which is connected to a bank’s computer by telephone line via a host
processor. This processor performs a similar function to an Internet Service Provider
in that it is the gateway through which all the ATM networks become available to the
customer.

ATMs have two input devices. These are the card reader and the keypad. When a bank
card is inserted into the card reader, the reader captures the information which is stored
on the magnetic strip, and the host processor uses this information to route the
transaction to the customer’s bank. The keypad lets the customer tell the bank what
kind of transaction is required, and also allows them to enter their personal
identification number (PIN) for verification.

ATMs also have four output devices. These are the speaker, the display screen, the
cash dispenser and the receipt printer. The speaker provides the customer with
auditory feedback when a key is pressed, the display screen prompts the customer
through each stage of the process, the cash dispenser dispenses the money (when
required), and finally the receipt printer provides the customer with a paper receipt of
the transaction.
