Speech Topic: A books is better than its movie

• INTRODUCCTION
“Never judge a book by its movie”, this is a tremendously powerful quote by J.W. Eagan who is one of the
most popular book quotes on the web, but his identity is a mystery.

In the next few minutes, I’m going to explain the three main reasons why a reading book is better than
watching its movie.

BODY (3 RELEVANT POINTS)

First reason, in a movie the book essence is lost during its adaptation. When the writer of the film script
doesn´t coincide with the book author, the interpretation of characters in the movie loses the true meaning
of the book. So much of what makes a book come alive on the page is the use of figurative language.
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is often lost to modern audiences because the language just doesn’t
translate on screen so the irony, sarcasm, and other emotions of the book are woefully lost.
Second reason, a movie has limited time to tell the story. Due to time constraints, most movies play in less
than two hours because they need to capture people’s attention. The books condensation in films causes
that it is crucial to reduce the developments of the book, and therefore, in the films they must remove scenes
that the reader wants to see because they are extremely outstanding moments of the books and that allow
ideas to be connected and understand in a correct way the story.
The final and reason, the movie is not how I imagined the story in my book. Once a filmmakers decide the
settings and characters, we are limited to seeing those characteristics that were made through their eyes,
and if an actor or event don´t live up to what I imagined when I was reading the book, there is extremely
disappointment. According to researches, reading fuels the imagination and it makes the thought goes
beyond the text and create alternative paths.

There are some good adaptations of books into movies, we can’t deny it, but reading a book has no limits,
because it arouses our curiosity, activates our inspiration, transforms our knowledge, we can be part of the
story and it takes more than two hours.
