Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square was constructed between 1829 and 1841 to

commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The Column is 56 meters high; the statue of
Nelson is 5.5 meters high and it is made of granite. The four giant bronze lions at the base of
the Column were sculpted by sculptor Landseer. They present the strength of the British
Empire. It is used as a place to meet and celebrate the New Year.
