This practice, while not fully restoring a windscreen to its original condition, is practicable because: 8) it improves the appearance of the damaged area and its optical quality, b) it restores a smooth surface to damaged areas that may otherwise interfere with ‘windscreen wipers; ©} it prevents further deterioration (e.g. moisture ingress). ‘This standard has been prepared taking into account the requirements for glazing and visibility in the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986. It gives procedures that should be adopted for carrying out repairs and general guidance on the type of materials to be used. Performance requirements for windscreen repair systems, including materials, for carrying out repairs in accordance with this British Standard are given in BS AU 251:1904, Specification for performance of awlomotive laminated windscreen repair systems. (Compliance with this British Standard can amily be achieved with eystems and materials conforming to BS AU251. 0 ~ * Examples of types of windscreen damage are given in annex A and details of the size of damage that can be repaired in different areas of the windscreen are given in annex B. ‘A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. For dated references, subsequent amandments to, or revisions of, any of these publications do not apply. For undated references, the latest edition of thé publication referred to applies. BS AU 251:1994, Specification Jor performance of ‘automotive laminated windscreen repair sysiems. 3 General 3.1 The type and size of damage that can be repaired should be limited as a function of the position of the damage on the windscreen (see annexes A and B). 8.2. The degree of damage that can be repaired in each of the windscreen zones identified in annex B should be as follows: — zone A: damage within a circle 10mm in diameter, — zone B: damage within a circle 15mm in diameter; — zone O: damage within a circle 25mm in diameter, — zone D: damage within a circle 40 mm in diameter. NOTE For HGVs and coaches with more than eight passenger ‘eats, cracks up to 160:mn in length may be repaired, provided ‘they do not extend from an edge to an edge of the windscreen. Repairs less than 100 mm apart should not be carried out. 8.3. Systems and materials should conform to BS AU 251. Any repair ‘kit manufacturer's instructions should be followed. 4.2 Removal of dirt contamination Dirt and other foreign matter should be completely removed from the damaged area by careful cleaning Ce. scraping, abrading, and, if necessary, drilling). “Care should be taken not to penetrate the interlayer (especially when drilling). 4.3 Removal of water contamination "Any moisture in the damaged area should be removed prior to carrying out the repair. NOTE 1 Water contamination may be removed by carefil use of ‘hot air blower. Care should be taken that the damaged area remains dry until completion of the repair. NOTE2. If the damaged area is not kept dry, whitening of the potyeiny!batyral (PYB)interayer occurs, 4A Materials ‘Only repair resin-mix kits conforming to BS AU 251 should be used. 4.5 Temperature Umitation Repairs should be carried out with the glass ‘temperature either in the range 10°C to 25°C or as stated in the repair kit manufacturer's instructions. 4.6 Type, size and conditions of damage ‘The following restrictions regarding the type and size ‘of damage should be complied with: a) repairs of damaged areas on windscreens should conform to annex B regarding position and size limitation; ) damage extending through all layers of glass should not be considered repairable in any area of windscreen; ) damage with a crater at the point of impact exceeding 5 mm in diameter should not be considered repairable; 4) if damage, delamination or irreversible contamination of the interlayer has occurred, the windscreen should not be considered repairable. 5 Quality assessment ‘The repairer should inspect the repaired area to ensure it conforms to a) toc). Visual inside of the vehicle, under good illumination from a distance of 230 min with normal corrected vision. If after the repair a residual small dull spot is ‘visible in the damaged area, the spot should not exceed 5 mm in diameter. 'b) Repaired areas should be free of voids, air bubbles or foreign materials. ©) Repaired aress should not interfere with windscreen wiper function. 6 Training Professional repairers should be trained and certified by the manufacturer of the repair system or their approved representative to be competent in carrying ‘out repairs conforming to this standard. 7 Report and record keeping ‘The repairer should make and retain a record of the 8) the invoice number, b) date of repair; ¢) date of invoice if different from the date of repair; @) the name and address of the repair organization; ©) identification of repairer, {the name and address of the customer; @) the registration number, make and model of vehicle; 1) details of work carried out; 1) the type and location of damage (see annex B).
