MODULE IN TLE / DRAFTING EXPLORATORY
NSQ / WEEK 1 / DAY 1

Objective: To assess the learner’s current knowledge about drafting and its concept.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY: INTRODUCTION TO DRAFTING

“Today is your first session for this module and we will begin by describing
drafting and what is it all about.”

Drafting, otherwise known as technical drawing or houses, is the creation of

accurate representations of objects, buildings for technical, architectural or
engineering purposes. Someone who is skilled in drafting is called a draftsman
or draftsperson.

In drafting, objects are drawn to scale, and usually comprise a top view, a main
view and a side view of the object or building. They are usually very detailed,
and are often used as blueprints for the construction or assembly of the
object. While they are sometimes used in engineering, they are more common
in architecture.

Architects will engage draftsmen to draft house designs, showing the dimensions of the house, the configuration of the
rooms, and specifications for windows, doors, lights, appliances and other features, as well as external details such as
driveways, garden beds, fencing and roof type. These are house plans or building plans.

Traditionally, house plans and technical drawings are done on paper with pencils, rulers and protractors, but more recently,
computer-assisted design, or CAD, has become the preferred way of drafting design. It produces a three- dimensional
technical image of the object or building and is quicker and more accurate than a manual drawing. It can also be stored
electronically and provides more detail and options. Drafting services use CAD and archi-CAD as their major method
of creating plans and designs. SOURCES: https://www.yellowpages.com.au/articles/drafting- services/what-is-
drafting (2015)

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY: HISTORY OF DRAWING (PART 1)

“In this lesson, we will travel back in time, to perceive the humble beginning of
drawing and how it evolves as time goes by. Sit tight!” – Teacher Jay

Drawing is a form of visual art in which a person uses various drawing instruments to
mark paper or another two-dimensional medium. It is one of the oldest forms of
human expression, with evidence for its existence preceding that of written
communication. It is believed that drawing was used as a specialised form of
communication before the invention of the written language, demonstrated by the production of cave and rock
paintings around 30,000 years ago. These drawings, known as pictograms, shown objects with abstract concepts. The
sketches and paintings produced by Neolithic times were eventually stylised and simplified in to symbol systems and
eventually into early writing systems.

Egyptian hieroglyphs were the formal writing system used in Ancient Egypt. Hieroglyphs combined logographic, syllabic
and alphabetic elements, with a total of some 1,000 distinct characters.

While in Ancient China, paper is invented made out of plant like fibres was invented by the Chinese Cai Lun, who in 2nd
century China, mixed textile fibers from the bark of the mulberry in water and produced sheets of paper from that. The
invention of paper was one of the reasons of the successes of early China, through easier governing of the country.

Archaeological findings have shown that paper was first made from plant-like fibres, were already used from 140 to 87
BC. SOURCES: https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Papermaking/History_of_paper

Objective: To situate the historical foundation of drawing during the medieval and renaissance period.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY: HISTORY OF DRAWING (PART 2)

“Hello! As we go on with our historical lesson, we will now go to the medieval and renaissance times of
classical arts. It is in Europe, Middle Eastern, and Northern Africa where great artists influenced
drawings and designs that were connected to religious activities in early civilization.”

The Medieval art of the Western world covers a vast scope of time and place, over 1000 years of art in
Europe, and at times the Middle East and North Africa. It includes major art movements and periods,
national and regional art, genres, revivals, the artists' crafts, and the artists themselves. Gothic art was a
style of medieval art that developed in Northern France out of Romanesque art in the 12th century AD, led
by the concurrent development of Gothic architecture. Sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medieval_art

The Renaissance was a period in European history marking the transition from
the Middle Ages to Modernity and covering the 15th and 16th centuries. The
Renaissance began in the 14th century in Florence, Italy.

The Mona Lisa (figure at the right) by Leonardo Da Vinci is considered an

archetypal masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, and has been described
as "the best known, the most visited, the most written about, most sung
about, the most parodied work of art in the world." Most experts say that
detail of Lisa's hands, her right hand resting on her left. Leonardo chose this
gesture rather than a wedding ring to depict Lisa as a virtuous woman and
faithful wife. SOURCES: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mona_Lisa

Of course we also have our very own, during the Spanish regime, Juan Luna de San
Pedro y Novicio Ancheta (figure at the right)(October 24, 1857 – December 7,
1899), better known as Juan Luna, was a Filipino painter, sculptor and a political
activist of the Philippine Revolution during the late 19th century. He became one of
the first recognized Philippine artists. (figure at the right)
His winning the gold medal in the 1884 Madrid Exposition of Fine Arts, he painted

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY: HISTORY OF DRAWING (PART 3)
“Howdy! On our last lesson about history of drawing, we will now
compare the manual and automated way of drawing and
designing. Let’s go!”

According to the ‘Origins of Architectural drawing’, Elif Ongut, an

architecture student from the University of Edinburgh, explains
that, in ancient times, the act of building existed in an intuitive
level. Architectural drawings by some of the earliest civilizations
weren’t created out of the urge to solve complicated design problems but rather of the
need for orientation. They started off as ground plans for buildings and were soon
followed by architectural sections.

Pre-Renaissance architectural drawings used to have a lot of errors, omissions and

exaggeration. According to Ongut, it was common that the building completed in the
architect’s head often could not manifest as originally designed in reality, due to lack
of communication between the architect and the mason. Such hypothetical
inferences employed in those drawings deemed them more or less unnecessary.

Fast forward to Modernism, where almost all the grand-masters of architecture had
their own distinct style of sketch, easily distinguishable. These sketches were more
of a conceptual nature, a few genius strokes of the pencil that determined the final
form of the building.

The introduction of Computer aided architectural design (CAAD) software in the

1960s made life much easier for architects, the biggest advantage being the
amount of time saved by not having to keep making drawings manually,
incorporating changes in the various stages of design and detail. This software
however, true to their name, remained as design aids and weren’t much used in
conceiving the design itself; although, they did manage to eventually
replace their nemesis- hand drawings. In a blink-and-you-miss moment,
architecture drawing software entered design schools and became ingrained as
a part of the core curriculum. SOURCES: https://www.arch2o.com/from-stone-
