lots of visitors for one night, but an
open floor plan that flows easily from the
foyer to the great and adjacent dining room

visitors feel welcome in your home. Subtle
distinctions such as an overhead ceiling

spaces without giving the closed-off feeling
that walls provide.

Looking at examples of homes
built with reclaimed materials,
I notice that much of the old
wood utilized in new construction appears
to be unfinished. Does wood reach a point
where it has “settled” or aged such that it
does not need to be finished, even when
used in an exterior application?
A
Although much of the reclaimed
timber used in new construction
wasn’t finished in its original appli-
cation, it’s highly recommended to apply a
penetrating oil or other protective coating to
any wood that will be subjected to outdoor
weathering. Reclaimed or not, all wood
degrades over time from sun, rain, snow
and insects, and the only way to preserve
your wood to ensure its long-term viability
in your home’s construction is by applying a
quality sealer.
“Any wood that’s subject to the
weather will take a beating,” says Jeff
Husted, co-founder of Vintage Timber-
works, a reclaimed timber supplier in Tem-
ecula, California. “Things can warp, they
can bow, they can pull apart.” If treated
properly, however, reclaimed wood has a
number of advantages over green wood in
both interior and exterior applications.
“In terms of movement,” says Husted,
“if you put up new lumber outside, it’s
going to shrink and move more than an
old seasoned piece of wood will. When
you put green lumber into a building, it will
lose moisture and shrink depending where
it was cut on the tree, and it will do some
twisting and bowing. In an exposed applica-
tion, it will not look the same a year down
the road.”
Depending on the home’s location,
Husted also recommends treating exterior
wood with borate to fend off termites. Fi-
nally, before you apply any kind of coating,
even a clear sealer, to your entire home,
be sure to test it out on a small area first to
ensure you like the end result.

OF SURPRISE
The Olsens’ home is nearly complete thanks to creativity, collaboration and —
of course — a few last-minute design decisions.

design “Interior design is a lot different than interior decorating; it’s
much more technical,” explains Katie Levin, interior designer
with New Energy Works Timberframers. When designing
your plan and choosing your finishing options, remember
to think about items like fixtures and appliances well before
construction begins. “Everything needs to work together,”
says Levin. “We take extra care to make sure that every light
switch and every outlet is exactly where it needs to be for
the home to function well for its owners in the future.”

WOOD HOME tours another when it comes to interior de-
sign. The Olsens, for example, fell in
love with dark walnut floors and wood
is a material that soaks up a lot of light,
so to keep things bright, we went with
a more contemporary, lighter wood
for the cabinets. The choice of wood
floors really drove other major deci-
sions inside the home.”

as much as possible always delivers the

And with the end in sight, the re-
sults couldn’t be much better, says
Greg. “We didn’t build too small, we
didn’t build too big — it’s just right.
We have everything that we want, and
really nothing that we don’t want.
That’s exactly what Ty was trying to get
us to do all along, and I think we really
accomplished that.” Q

3,800 square foot timber frame hybrid home – Cashier, NC
The timber frame itself has two unique features: It is hand-hewn;
and it has a pickled-whitewash finish to it… creating, in concert
with the many interior design ideas of the customer, a home that
is a personalized balance of both mountain-rustic and mountain-
luxury. In addition to the primarily timber frame home, there is a
small hand-hewn cabin section which gives the impression that
the house was built around a 200 year old cabin. First floor pictured above, second floor not shown.
