Northern White Cedar is at the heart of everything at Katahdin Cedar Log Homes. We know
cedar: scientifically proven to have superior resistance to aging, insects, rot, cracking, shrinkage,
heat and cold when compared to pine. We know where to find it in sustainable forests, how
to use every bit of the tree and save the very finest for our beautiful log homes. We make more cedar
log homes than anyone in the US, and the most cedar fence anywhere. That makes Katahdin the
largest primary processor of Northern White Cedar in the world. So what does that mean to you?

Cedar for the price of pine.

GEORGE KLEMENS
TIMBERBUILT

What was the main thing the homeowners and

design team were striving for when they decided
to create this custom house?
Kendra and Don originally had their hearts set on a
10,000-square-foot home, but I suggested something
much smaller to keep it appropriate within the landscape.
Because we built lots of volume into the house, we didn’t
need as much floor space to give it plenty of elbow room.
We wanted to prove that you could build a beautiful house
but still be environmentally-friendly in the process.

What is the benefit of this kind of build — combining

timbers and SIPs?
Besides the energy savings, there is a lot less field labor
and a lot less waste on the job site because all of the
window and door cut outs are done in the factory. For
us,“hybrid” is all about combining timbers and SIPs to cre-
ate the most energy-efficient building envelope available.

No matter the style, why do you think people are

drawn to wood homes?
There is certainly an aesthetic element to it, but living in a
wood home is a lifestyle. It isn’t about having a shinier home
than the next guy; it’s about nature, being environmentally
respectful and seeing the bigger picture.

“Working with Woodhouse was a great experience. They

made a complex process easy to understand. Watching how
the timber frame itself went up in three days and was plum,
square, and level was incredible. We love the house and
how energy efficient it is.
Woodhouse helped achieve our hope and dreams.”

Whole House,

Every room needs
great design,
but is any more fun
than the kitchen?

This is particularly true in a timber frame

where the open floor plans marry perfectly
with the volumes and craft of the wood
posts & beams. It used to be that kitchens b
were designed around the ‘work triangle’
where the relationship between the fridge,
sink, stove was the most important factor.

We built the Vermont Street Project, our a
family home, a few years back in Portland
OR. The modest home put into practice new
thinking around room design, particularly in
the main living area know as ‘the commons’.

when we design a kitchen, we think in
terms of zones: c

a - Food storage and prep

Tied into the fridge, the pantry, and when possible

b - Pantry
In these open floor plan homes, upper cabinets are not
as common and frankly we love the pantry as a way to

This floor plan allows the cook and the cooking process
to be part of the family, while keeping “onlookers”
out of the way.

Whole House,
Whole Room.

Great Lake Homestead

The third episode in a legacy project located on the high banks of Lake Erie, this house
shares the view with a whimsical timber framed guest house, carriage house, and a gazebo.
Details include an open three story stair tower with central timber mast, custom steel
spinner-head bolts and walnut inlay sheer keys in the reclaimed Douglas fir beams.
