In my own point of view, Juan de Plancensia’s purpose in writing the document is

primarily to respond to the request of the monarchy in Spain. In which he has to

deliver information about the different doings and beliefs of Indians in the colony.
And for that, he has to record his journey, particularly the important and necessary
events he had seen. Through his work, aside from being a friar, he writes not only
information about the Indians but he also included some data from the Philippines.
Thus, the purpose is to reply the Lordship’s letter yet providing records about our
country became also part of the purpose.

As a student learning the readings in Philippine history, it is important for me to

have the necessary reading materials. Like document, it serves as the bridge for me
to access and learn the old way of living of the Tagalogs. And as a Filipino, the
document also allows me to discover the past to give value in the present. Having
the document also needs analysis in order to fully understand it. Thus, I was able to
attained knowledge, and most especially explored the customs of tagalogs which is
the important connection of the document to my recognition and appreciation of the
Tagalog customs.

There are two major premises I discovered, tagalogs in Luzon are governed by
datos. They have chief who rules them and is also a captain in their battles whom
they follow and respect. Also, tagalogs were divided by barangays. Families, which
include parents, children, relatives even slaves were grouped and called as
barangay. Thus, the major premises presented were, tagalogs are governed by datos
and divided by barangays.
