Guttenberg, and Ted Danson, are the two films I've chosen to evaluate. Both films were
released in 1987, and while having a similar subject matter, reviewers and audiences reacted to
them in completely different ways. Both films have the same fundamental plot: a career or
party-oriented individual "inherits" or is abandoned by a previous lover with a newborn girl. They
don't want her at first and are unsure what to do with her, but they quickly fall in love with her
and change their lifestyles to accommodate their new daughter. The basic narrative of the movie
may be this generalization, but when the specifics are revealed, they go drastically different
courses.
The primary character's sex is the first important difference (s). Diane Keaton plays JC Wyatt, a
management consultant who lives in New York City with her 'partner' and works incessantly in
Baby Boom. She only goes out with clients and has sex on rare occasions. He asks her if she
wants to make love in one of the first sequences of the film, they display the clock, and barely
two minutes have elapsed before they are finished. When she receives this child from distant
cousins, she is unsure what to do because she does not match the position of mother and has
never done so. It is not a part of her daily routine. This is where her societal issue of role conflict
comes into play. Her lone identification is as a single lady working at a job.
When a person has two or more statuses at the same time, conflicting role obligations are
imposed on them. JC is a working professional, and being a mother does not come easy or
without hardship for her. This is a very realistic issue; in fact, millions of working moms and
single working mothers throughout the country are in the same boat. They must work to support
themselves and their kid, but the burden of being both a working woman and a mother may be
overwhelming.
