The main objectives of this course are to understand, basies of engincering with are essential for everyone. The course covers principle of surveying. method and equipments used for surveying, building material used for construction, dif- ferent components of building, forces and its equilibrium, evaluation of centre of gravity = and moment of inertia of simple and composite sections, simple stress and strain, method of analysis of truss, estimation and costing. Overall, this course will help to understand the basic of civil engineering used in our day to day life. B. COURSE OUTCOMES: Afier successful study of course, students will be able to: ICV1001.1] Know the scope and role of civil engineering and civil engineer in development of Society. [CV1001.2} To understand the use of different surveying instruments and their use. [CV1001.3] Describe the scientific terminologies related to building materials and compo- nents of building. ICV1001.4] Assess the force acting on a materials, centre of gravity and moment of inertia of composite area, ICV1001.5] Calculate the different type of stress like, yp) MANIPAL UNIVERSITY QM jan imple stress, shear stress, and direct stress and strain in the material, and analysis of truss. Familiar to basic terminologies related to Estimation and Costing, PROGRAM OUTCOMES AND PROGRAM SPECIFIC OUTCOMES, 1 Engincering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, en- gineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, research literature, and analyze com- plex engincering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering = problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety. and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowl edge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and in- terpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclu- sions Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, re~ sources, and modem engineering and IT tools including prediction and mod- cling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limita- tions The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal, and cultural issues and the ~ consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice 10. gin) MANIPAL UNIVERSITY AM farrun Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demon- strate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development Ethies: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics_and re- sponsibilities and norms of the engineering practices Individual and team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a yember or leader in diverse teams, and in multi sciplinary settings Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activi- ties with the engineering community and with society at large, such as, being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effe ive presentations, and give and receive clear instructions Project management and finance: Demonstrate knowledge and understand- ing of the engineering and management principles and apply these to one’s, own work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in mul- tidisciplinary environments, ion and Life-long learning: Recognize the need for, and have the preparé ability to engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change Design economic, environment friendly, sustainable civil engineering struc- tures keeping in view national and social requirements. Conduct investigation, analysis and interpretation of the results using modern scientific tools and technical skills for solving complex civil engineering problem.
