Vehicle Costs Worksheet”

Your main expenses for this trip, outside of the car, will be food, lodging, and
media entertainment, which are calculated separately. Remember, your
trip must take at least 7 days, but no longer than 31 days.

NOTFlicks will provide you with three different types of Food, Lodging,
and Media/Entertainment options. Pick one from each category below:

How many people are going on your trip (including yourself): __________
1) * Rationale: Which options did you choose for each category, and why? How do they tie in with your interests?
Do they tie in with supporting tourism in some way? *Copy this to your powerpoint presentation*

2) Given the number of people that are going on the trip, what is the total amount you will spend on food and
lodging each day? Show your work, typed or hand-written. *Copy this to your powerpoint presentation*

Total Food and Lodging Per Day:

3) Given the number of people that are going on the trip, what is the total amount you will spend on Media
Entertainment for everyone going on this trip? Show your work, typed or hand-written. *Copy this to your
powerpoint presentation*

Total Media Entertainment Expense:

4) Let x represent the number of days on a trip. Write an algebraic expression to represent how much you will
spend JUST on food and lodging for any given amount of days (hint: you have this info in #2 above).
*Copy this to your powerpoint presentation*

Food and Lodging Algebraic Expression:

5) Write an equation that will give you the total cost for food, lodging, and media entertainment (y) for any given
amount of days (x). *Copy this to your powerpoint presentation*
Total Accommodations Cost Algebraic Equation:

NOTFlicks will allow you to use the following vehicles for your trip because they have product placement
deals. Make sure you have enough room for all of your passengers. Pay attention to the Miles Per Gallon (MPG), you
will have to pay for gas as well.

MPG: Miles Per Gallon

City MPG: the score a car will get on average in city conditions, with stopping and starting at lower speeds.
HWY (Highway) MPG: the average a car will get while driving on an open stretch of road without stopping or starting,
typically at a higher speed.

6) What type of vehicle did you choose and why? *Copy this to your powerpoint presentation*

7) Calculate the combined MPG for your vehicle by averaging the city and highway MPG (this is an approximation,
not the exact combined MPG). Show your work, either typed or hand-written. *Copy this to your powerpoint
presentation*

Average MPG:
8) Use the average MPG to find out how many gallons it will take you to finish your trip. Show all work, typed or
hand-written. Reference the table from “Route Worksheet”, #2: Total Miles). *Copy this to your
powerpoint presentation*

Total Miles for your trip: Average MPG for your vehicle choice:

Total Gallons of Gas Needed:

9) Notflicks will have gas available throughout the trip at their corporate rate of $3.20 per gallon. How much will
your total cost on gas be? Show your work, either typed or hand-written. *Copy this to your powerpoint
presentation*

Total Gallons of Gas Needed (from #3 above): Cost per Gallon: $3.20

Total Cost of Gas for entire trip:

10) Let x represent the number of days on a trip. Write an algebraic expression to represent how much you will
spend JUST on rental fees for any given amount of days. (refer to table of vehicle costs above. Reference: Cost
per day) *Copy this to your powerpoint presentation*

Vehicle Rental Algebraic Expression:

11) Write an algebraic equation to represent the total vehicle and gas expenses (y) for any given amount of days (x).
*Copy this to your powerpoint presentation*

Total Vehicle Expense Algebraic Equation:

12) Refer to your ROUTE WORKSHEET, #2: Number of days you estimate your trip will be. Based on this estimated
number of days, use the equation you wrote in part 11 to determine the total vehicle cost for the trip. Show all
work here, typed or hand-written: *Copy this to your powerpoint presentation*

Estimated Total Vehicle Expense:

SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW QUESTIONS

Answer the following questions and show all work for full credit. Work for show-what-you-know questions must be
included and HAND-WRITTEN to receive credit. These questions can only be submitted and attempted once. (Do NOT
copy this to your presentation).

Show what you know, Part 1: Using your equation from #5 above, what would your total cost for food, lodging, and
media entertainment be if your road trip lasted 10 days? Remember, y represents the total food, accommodations and
media entertainment costs and x represents the number of days the trip took. Show all work, typed or hand-written:

Show what you know, Part 2: Use the following equation to solve the problem: y = 50x + 250 where y represents the
total vehicle expenses (rental and gas) and x represents the number of days the trip took.

Sam spends a total of $1500 on vehicle expenses that includes rental per day and gas. How long was his trip? Show all
work here:

Show what you know, Part 3: Solve the inequality for x: 12 x>10 (2 x−3)−10

NEXT STEPS:
1) SUBMIT this completed worksheet to the course for grading
a) Be sure to save this worksheet to your computer for later! You will revisit it throughout
the project!

2) UPDATE POWERPOINT PRESENTATION!

a) Copy Parts 1-12 from above into your Project Powerpoint on the slides:
“ACCOMMODATIONS AND VEHICLE COSTS.” Do not just include numbers here! Include
what the answer represents! (restate the question)
b) Save your presentation often!
i) You are not turning the Powerpoint Presentation in until later in the semester.
