Read the passage about Amelia Earhart. Match the sentences below to the correct
gaps in the text

When she was just 23 years of age, Amelia Earhart first learned to fly a plane. Her mother wasn’t
very happy about the idea. (1)____________ But Amelia worked three jobs at the same time just
to save up enough money for the lesson, and she was sure it was the right thing to do. As she
took off and headed up towards the sky, Amelia was extremely excited. (2)____________ Little
did she know, that one lesson would change her life forever…

Less than a year later, Amelia bought her own plane. It was second-hand and bright yellow, and
she named it ‘The Canary’. It was in this plane that she broke her first world record – the
greatest height recorded for a female pilot – and Amelia didn’t stop there. (3)____________ In
fact, in 1932, Amelia made real history when she became the first woman to fly solo across the
Atlantic Ocean. She would have also been the first female pilot to fly around the world, but when
her plane took off on 2 July 1932, it was for the last time. (4)______________ During that flight,
both Amelia and her plane completely disappeared, never to be found again!
Some people have spent their whole lives trying to figure out what happened, and have ended
up very confused. (5)_____________ Nobody knows for sure and lots of different people have
come up with lots of different stories. Maybe one day we’ll know!
