Task # 9USING COURSEBOOKS
· With the presence of good coursebook, there is a strong possibility that the language, content
and sequencing in the book will be appropriate, and that the topics and treatment of the
different language skills will be attractive. But for some reasons, the teacher may decide that the
coursebook is not appropriate for the class. That's why there are alternatives to consider if we
decide that part of a coursebook is not appropriate. We might simply decide to omit the lesson,
replace the coursebook lesson with one of our own, add activities to what is in the book and
rewriting parts of it. As we can see, creative coursebooks is one of the teacher's main skills
because it is effective and suitable in teaching.
· Teacher's have different opinions in coursebook use, either positive nor negative. But
coursebook has been carefully researched and has a consistent grammar syllabus as well as
providing us appropriate vocabulary exposure and practice together with pronunciation work
and writing tasks.
· The usage of coursebook depends on the decision of teachers wether they choose good
coursebooks. In choosing coursebooks, it is always a good idea to ask the opinions of students
on what looks best to them. They may not make decision for us, but their opinion can help us
come to a final decision. Generally, teachers should make decisions about which coursebook to
use based on analysis, piloting, consultation and the gathering of opinions from students and
collegues, and that one way of doing this is to prepare a checklist of questions.
