+ nouns and Gerund

Verbs + nouns:
Hello everybody! Today we are going to learn how to use Verbs + a noun or
a verb + a gerund. Let’s start!

Look at these sentences:

1 ) Like + noun 2 ) Love + noun


Example: Example:

I like hamburgers. They love fried chicken.

3 ) Hate+ noun 4 ) Enjoy + noun


Example: Example:

Karen and I hate soccer. We enjoy comedies.

5 ) don’t like + noun


Example:

I don’t like traffic.

It’s different when we have one of these verbs + a gerund.

For example:

1 ) Like + gerund 2 ) Love + gerund


Example: Example:

I like singing and drawing. They love cooking.

3 ) Hate + gerund 4 ) Enjoy + gerund

My friends hate watching We enjoy walking and relaxing.

Gerund (verb+ing)

You know, as usual, there are always exceptions. In the chart below we will
explain some of them:
(Note: C = consonant; V = vowel)

If the base verb do this and add Examples


ends in

C + V + C and a double the final ing Stop - stopping


stressed syllable consonant run – running
swim- swimming

C + “e” remove “e” ing Dance - dancing


Make - making

C + “ie” change “ie” to “y” ing Lie – lying


Die – dying
