Contract for Commissioned Work (Example)

This document will serve as an agreement for a commissioned work between


_____________ (hereby referred to as ‘Commissioner’), and __________ (hereby
referred to as ‘Composer’). The details of this work are listed below:

Instrumentation: Piano and strings (violin, viola, cello, contrabass) or any combination
thereof.

Length: 10 minutes (approximate)

Delivery Date: A complete working draft with score and parts playable will be due to
Commissioner by 1 Sep. 2021. Any changes made to the score after this date come at the
discretion of Composer and Commissioner.

Payment: Commissioner agrees to pay Composer a sum total of $1,000.00 for


completion of the work. This is to be paid in two installments:
• $500.00 upon signing of this agreement
• $500.00 upon delivery of score and parts playable to Commissioner
(1 Sep. 2021). This payment may be delivered sooner if score and parts
are received before the aforementioned date.

Rehearsals: Commissioner shall arrange with Composer in terms outside of this


agreement the appropriate time, location, and duration of rehearsals.

Premier: Commissioner has the option to be the first to premier this work. Subsequent
performance rights are to be held by Composer. If there is no premier date and/or venue
determined at the time this contract is signed, one may be secured in terms outside this
agreement.

Any desired changes in the aforementioned terms can result in a restructuring of this
agreement, at the discretion of all parties, after which a new agreement can be drafted.

Any violation of these terms by either party can result in a termination of this agreement.
