AN ACTION RESEARCH PROPOSAL

ON

ACADEMIC SUPPORT AND IMPLICATIONS ON COGNITIVE PERFORMASNCE OF HOMEBASED

STUDENTS

• I. Context & Rationale

The presence of the global Covid-19 pandemic had put the world into a major stop ever

since the start of 2020 and placed our country, the Philippines, under one of the most affected

countries ever since March of this year. It halted all the normal things that we do and brought

various challenges to the different sectors in the country such as in the field of the economy and

education.

However, we cannot do otherwise but to cope up with the current situation and adjust our

lifestyle so that we may be able to complete our tasks and continue with our lives. This is where

the term “New Normal” was born. In order to accomplish the tasks that we normally do, we have

to do it with restrictions and caution to avoid the threat of catching and spreading the Covid-19

Virus.

Basic education is among the sectors that was heavily affected by as the schools and

other learning centers are closed for physical conduct of classes. However, the agency is also

trying their best as to cope up with the pandemic. The Department of Education is doing their

best to come up with methods and techniques to cater the needs of the learners despite the

challenges that we experience nowadays. Different modalities have been introduced by the

agency to solve the issue of “learning poverty” which the learners were experiencing during the

height of the pandemic.

As stated in the DepEd order No. 12 series of 2020 entitled “Adoption of the Basic

Education Learning Continuity Plan for school year 2020-2021 in light of the Covid-19 Public

health Emergency” In order to provide guidance to all the sectors involved DepEd developed the

Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan or BE-LCP which is a package of educational

interventions that will respond to the education challenges brought about by the pandemic.

Through this, the agency formulated various solutions to cater the continuity of education

in the country despite the health threat we are facing. Various learning modalities were

introduced which is very new not just to the learners but to teachers as well. These modalities

include distance learning, blended learning and homeschooling. To further narrow down the

possible modalities to be used as early as the month of May 2020 DepEd conducted a survey on

the capability of households to adopt learning strategies that will be utilized in lieu of traditional

face-to-face classes.

By the end of July DepEd released the data consolidated which states that Modular

learning is the most preferred by both students and parents for the conduct of distance learning

for the coming school year.

DepEd said that 8.8 million stakeholders chose printed modules; followed by blended

learning or the combination of learning through modules, online classes, television, and radio

(3.9 million parents); online learning (3.8 million); educational TV (1.4 million parents); radio-

based instruction (900,000); and other modalities not specified by the agency (500,000).

By the start of the school year 2020-2021 last October 5, 2020 the most widely used

method in learning modality was is the modular learning modality. In this method, printed

modules per subjects are distributed to the learners in which they are given a period of time to

accomplish and return weekly.

However, as months of modular learning went on there was a visible surge in the number

of suicide incidents both students and teachers that occurred which is being linked by the public

with the modular learning method done by the learners. With this occurrence, the clamor of the

public for “Academic freeze” to avoid “Academic Stress” was raised.

Despite having no direct evidence that Modular learning is indeed the main reason of

such occurrence, the Department of education released and official statement last October 20,

2020 which states that the public should stop assuming the suicide cases are related to modular

and distant learning methods. Furthermore, the agency is also doing their best to suggest

measures to foster ‘academic ease’ and help teachers and learners who are still adapting to the

distance learning set-up.

The researcher being and adviser to the Grade 11 Senior high school students have also

observed that the students tend to be stressed out in finishing their modules with the short

deadlines they are being given and since the modules solely relies on reading which most often

is not contextualized nor explained to them in a deeper manner, most of these students tend to

get anxious and some withdraw to the point wherein they don’t answer most of activities and

tasks being assigned. Furthermore, the researcher observed as weeks of modules distribution

goes on, the number of students who passes their modules on time decreases and most

students are asking for extensions of deadlines. When asked for the reason of asking for

extension, most students tend to claim of time constraint and that they are having a hard time in

completing all the tasks given per each subject since most of the students also have chores

done at home. Some tend to reason out the lack of gadgets and internet availability since some

subjects require them to do research and other reason out that there are no guardians/parents to

guide them and help them out in answering parts of the modules they find challenging. Thus,

making them lose their motivation or may elevate their stress. just to finish their modules.

The researcher aims to formulate and provide academic support to those students who

are having a hard time in coping up and are lagging with their modules with the aid of the

psychosocial well-being of the students and/or prevent or treat mental stress. The researcher will

observe any evident implications of the above mentioned academic support on the cognitive

performance of the students during the distance learning modality set-up

• II. Action Research Questions

Generally, this action research aims to determine the Implication of Academic Support on

the Cognitive performance of Homebased Grade 11 students

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the Cognitive performance of the Grade 11 students before the Academic

support?

2. What is the Cognitive performance of the Grade 11 students after the Academic

support?

• III. Proposed Innovation, Intervention, and Strategy

The researcher as the Grade 11 adviser will formulate methods and provide academic

support to help motivate those students who are having a hard time in coping up and are lagging

with their modules with the aid of the Individual Learning Monitoring Plan to assess their

performance and to find out which among the students are lagging behind. Furthermore, the

researcher will utilize the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) strategies and

materials which are the range of activities that will promote and protect the psychosocial well-

being of the students and/or prevent or treat mental stress. The researcher aims to formulate

and provide academic support to those students who are having a hard time in coping up and

are lagging with their modules with the aid of the Individual Learning Monitoring Plan.

• IV. Action Research Method

• a. Participants/Sources of Data and Information

The participants of this investigation were the sixty (60) Grade 11 General Academic

Strand students of Felix Balgos National High School School Year 2020 – 2021.

This study will use purposive sampling in which particular settings, persons or events are

selected deliberately in order to provide important information that cannot be obtained from other

choices (Maxwell, 1996). It is where the researcher includes cases or participants in the sample

because they believe that they warrant inclusion.

• b. Data Gathering Methods

 Self-made Test

A self-made test will be prepared which will be answered by the respondents before

and after the intervention is given thru online using the Google Form. The self-made test will

determine the source of stress that may cause stressful situations at any time during the

students’ time of studying.

 Individual Learning Monitoring Plan (ILMP)

The researcher shall assess the students’ Individual Learning Monitoring Plan

(ILMP). It will be used to monitor learner’s progress on given intervention strategies in

meeting the required learning competencies.

 Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) modules for Secondary Students.

These are supplemental modules and guidance notes for students to have a

venue of expressing their feelings, fears and anxieties. As well as to empower them to

move beyond their worries brought about by the pandemic and help them become more

active members of the community.

• c. Ethical Issues

Permission to conduct the study was first secured from the office of the Schools Division

Superintendent, Capiz Division. When the research proposal was granted, permission from the

principal will be secured. Furthermore, the researcher will secure parental consent for the

student’s participation.

Once approved, the researcher will be giving the self-made test on assessment of

academic stress to the respondents through Google forms. Furthermore, the researcher shall

check the Individual Learning Monitoring plan of each student to observe who among the

students are lagging behind in answering their modules. After the assessment of the Individual

Learning Monitoring plan the researcher will distribute and conduct Mental Health and

Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) modules and activities to the Grade 11 advisory class.

d. Data Analysis Plan

After the conduct of the study, the researcher shall observe of any improvement in the

cognitive performance of the participants basing on the progress indicated in the students’ the
