FINAL PROJECT OPM

The purpose of this project is to explore the operations function of an existing organization. Groups of
students are expected to select an organization and a process. This may be a service organization, a
manufacturing organization, a government entity, a health service organization. The groups shall prepare
presentations that should entail the following:

1. Briefly describe the organization or part of the organization that you will be using for this project.
List your contact person with appropriate contact information. Be sure you have permission to
access the part of the organization that you wish to study.

b. What product or service does it create?
2. Describe the organization.
a. What is the product or service?
b. What are its competitive advantages?
c. What are its operations competitive advantages?
d. Describe the industry.
e. Who are its primary competitors?
f. How does the competitive environment affect its operations?
3. Pick a product or service of this organization.
a. What are the inputs of product?
b. What transformational activities do they perform to add value?
c. What are the outputs?
d. Describe the process using a flow chart or a process activity chart.
e. Discuss the product’s location in the product life cycle.
4. Describe the organizations approach to quality for the product/service.
a. How do they ensure quality?
b. Do they use any quality tools?
c. Do they use inspections?
5. Describe the organization’s supply chain.
a. Who are its most important suppliers?
b. Who are its customers?
c. Do they outsource?
d. Do they use a many suppliers strategy or few suppliers strategy?
6. Describe the organizations inventory:
a. Raw material, WIP, finished goods.
b. Where in the process do they hold inventory?
c. What are the pros and cons of holding inventory for this organization?
d. How do they decide when to order and how much to order?
e. Does the organization use any just-in-time or lean practices?
