WEEK Technology-Based Art: Its Elements,
1 Characteristics and Adaptation
Lesson
I
In modern times, technology has a big impact on every aspect of human
life. It is being used as a vehicle towards connecting with human emotion while
representing an exploration of the human condition for a deeper understanding of
life. For younger generations like you, art is defined by technology, from its
creation, manipulation, reproduction, and even to its distribution.
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to identify the art elements in
the technology-based production arts, recognize the distinct characteristics of
modern arts in terms of production and functionality range of audience reach,
name the country’s pride 21st century Filipino digital artists, and describe how
they were influenced by the technology trend.

D
Learning Task 1: Compare the traditional arts to the digital ones. Use the
organizer below to process the given question. Answer this on a separate sheet of
paper.

traditional digital
both

Artworks that are computer-generated and/or manipulated are essentially

a Technology-based art.
Way back, traditional visual artists used actual brushes, palettes, paints,
inks, and natural pigments applied to paper, canvas, fabric, stucco walls, and
ceilings. At present, computer artists utilize the expanding powers of image
manipulation programs and applications to make their works appear in an
entire range of media—whether as a physical output or a virtual experience.

Learning Task 2: Accomplish the palette mapping by writing

words that represent ideas linked to the central key which is
the elements of arts. You can associate words/ideas with as
many as you can. Do this activity on a separate sheet of
paper.

ELEMENTS OF ART
By gaining a deeper understanding of the elements of art, it will be easier to
analyze, unravel, and create any type of artwork from painting and photography to
sculpture and architecture. The elements of art are concrete visual components
that work in tandem with principles of art that organize and harmonize them.

1. Line is the basis of all drawings. It is a recognizable path

created by a point moving in space. It can vary in length,
width, and direction. It can be horizontal, vertical,
diagonal, straight or curved, thick or thin. It can reveal
ideas, moods, and messages through their character and
direction and lead your eye around the composition.

2. Shape is a two-dimensional and flat area surrounded by

edges or outlines. It is the outcome of closed lines. It can
be geometric or organic shapes. In art, shapes can be used
to control how the viewer perceives a piece.

pinterest.com
3. Value is the artistic manipulation of light and dark within
a piece of artwork. In art, value helps build illusions of the
mass and volume, enables work to appear to be three-
dimensional form. It is also vital in creating a dramatic
effect and of the focal point within an artwork.

4. Form is created when the shape acquires depth and

becomes three-dimensional. It can be seen from different
angles. Cones, pyramids, spheres, and cubes are examples
pinterest.com of a form.

5. Texture is about how an object feels or looks. It can be

smooth, rough, thin, or thick. It can be created through
the various lines, values, and colors used from the actual
texture of the paper or canvas.

6. Color is a vital element of art that consists of different

pigments and is represented through varied mediums. It
has three components, hue, intensity, and value. Colors
can be used as a symbol, pattern and present deeper
meaning or feelings.

7. Space is an area where an artist creates for a specific

purpose. The area occupied by an object refers to positive
space, while negative space is the area around, between,
or within an object. These include background, middle
ground, and foreground.

Computer/Digital Arts
Digital or computer art got on the scene in the early 1960s. These were due
to the technology that was continually developing and became accessible at that
time. People who experimented arts were not essentially an artist. They were
engineers and scientists who had access to and experience with the hardware
needed. They were the ones who recognized the potential of artistic expression
through the application of scientific and mathematical principles.
In the example artworks presented here, you will notice a scientific or
mathematical look and feel to the creations of many digital artists. Frequently, it
features geometric forms and repeating patterns. Human beings, landscapes,
animals, and still-life elements, where traditional subjects were integrated as part
of those forms and patterns instead of focus .
As digital artists or computer art masters came to the fore in Europe,
Russia, and the United States, computer art exhibitions were well received and
highly popular.

Here are some of their works:

To express opinions on political, social, and cultural issues, advocate

causes that are critical to modern life, like the environment and climate change,
some of the digital artists used their works. Others even studied the philosophical
relationship between science and technology and the arts.

The Philippine Scene

Similarly, Filipino artists in our country have also been inspired by the
technology trend in art. However, this is even more true in the commercial sector.
Illustrating international comic books were primarily geared on computer-
generated works from the 1960s to the 1990s. Filipino illustrators are known for
their talents and are in great demand in this field. They end up being equally
wanted for as an animator for some major film production companies in the
United States, and series of television animation produced in different countries.
However, the younger generation of local artists is making progress through
the concept of using computer-generated works as a serious means of artistic
expression. Even prominent figures in the field, like artists and critics, accept and
recognize digital works as visual or fine art.

Cityscape
Antonio Gorordo,

Antonio Gorordo is a 55-year-old digital artist who has

used traditional painting tools and techniques for many years.
Ang Kiukok and Jose Joya's work inspired him to adapt their
style. In 2010, he discovered the art of digital painting. He uses
the known photo editing software Adobe Photoshop to create
his works. Offering unlimited possibilities and accessibility, he
believes that digital art is a new creative edge. He encourages
artists and art lovers to use new techniques in artistic creation.

He is an independent American artist specializing in mixed
media, drawings, and algorithmic art. In 1995, he was a co-
founder of Algorists with Roman Verostko. Pioneered
computer art incorporating traditional art media and
techniques, software, plotters, and custom-built devices to
produce original artwork.
Ronald "Ron" Davis

He is an American painter whose works are associated

with geometric and lyrical abstraction, abstract illusionism, color
field painting, hard-edge painting, shaped canvas painting, and
3D Computer Graphics. He uses two-dimensional, three-
dimensional, and digital space. He is a master of hundreds of
group exhibitions and nearly seventy solo exhibitions.

paper.

Technology-Based Art
Art and technology are closely connected than ever before. It provides us
with new ways of combining different types of media, allowing for more human
interaction, or just simplifying the process of creating something. Technology-
based art, or digital art for short, once created, can be easily mass-produced
because it is a work made and presented on digital technology. These include
pictures created entirely on a computer and hand-drawn pictures that have been
scanned into a computer and completed using software or applications. It can
also be animation and 3D virtual sculpture renderings or a combination of
multiple technologies. Some digital art also involves processing video images.
Artworks in the 21st century mainly use varied digital art forms, such as
mobile art, computer-generated images, digital photography, video games, and
digital painting, using various software and applications.

Mobile Phone Arts

 Changed the way we do things today.
 Can do a wide range of things
 Means of personal expression and artistic
creativity.
 Used for school projects, or reports that require
combining images, incorporating text, or even
including simple animations.
 Essential tool for most people. (Sunico et al.,
2015)
PIVOT 4A CALABARZON Arts G10 14
 Uses mobile phone cameras to capture the spontaneity of the moment.
 Gives birth to a new art form called “mobile photography”.

Computer Generated Images (CGI)

 Application of computer graphics to create images in
art, print media, videogames, television programs,
commercials, and videos.
 Visual scenes may be dynamic or static and may be two
-dimensional (2D).
 Commonly refer to 3D computer graphics to create
scenes or special effects in films and televisions.
 Used in foreign movies like Avatar, Pirates of the Caribbean, Incredible Hulk
and etc. (Sunico et al., 2015)
Digital Photography
 Captures, creates, edits and shares digital
images/photographs.
 Primary function is to record history, the whole
series of past events connected with someone or
something.
 Equates history with writing.
 Provides electronic or computer-based
photography services.
 Mainly used to create, publish, or use digital photographs on computers
and/or the Internet.
 Outcome or output is stored in a bitmap (BMP) format.

Some electronic and computing technologies that are part of digital photography
Electronic/digital cameras: capture images/photographs and store them in
built-in/integrated storage media cards.
Computing devices: include webcam integrated with a computer/laptop or a
scanner that enables the capturing of existing physical (paper/card) images.
Digital photography software: purpose-built software enables the modification
of texture, color, brightness, and many other image attributes.
For today’s rising generation that grew up in the age of technology, even
today’s entertainment is accompanied by modern devices. An integral part of
entertainment is in the form of video games of all imaginable types, topics, and
skill levels.
Video Games
 Various interactive games played by electronically
manipulating images on a screen.
 Use specialized electronic gaming devices, computers,
or mobile devices for entertainment.
 Modern video games have evolved into sophisticated
experiences. (Sunico et al., 2015)

15 PIVOT 4A CALABARZON Arts G10

 Instantiate many principles that are fundamental in altering behavior,
producing learning, and promoting brain plasticity.
 Involve predominately active forms of learning; typically more effective than
passive learning. (Sunico et al., 2015)

Digital Painting
 A method of creating artwork using a computer.
 Still makes use of traditional painting mediums such as
acrylic paint, oils, ink, and watercolor, and applies the
pigment to traditional surfaces, such as canvas, paper,
polyester, etc.
 Used computer software that drives a type of robot device
(such as a plotter) or an office machine (such as a printer)
that takes the place of the artist’s hand.
 A technique using a graphics software program to create a
virtual artwork.
 Stored finished work in virtual format to be shared
through cyberspace. (Sunico et al., 2015)

Video Technology / Imaging Videos

Social media purposes
 Provide a new platform for video materials targeting the “netizens” of today.
 Produce videos that are constantly uploaded to online platforms like
YouTube—from music, dance, and stage performances.
 Provide tutorials of all kinds, recipes, documentaries, news clips and other
entertainment clips. (Sunico et al., 2015)

Medical/scientific purposes
 Today’s video technology is that of imaging videos in the fields of medicine
and science. Examples are Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computerized
Tomography (CT scans), and the like which are used to create and record
visual images of a patient’s internal anatomy to diagnose and treat diseases
and injuries. Ultrasound tests or sonograms translate sound waves bouncing
off physical objects into images that can be studied—whether a baby
developing in the womb (in 2D, 3D, and 4D options), growths or
malformations inside the body, structural flaws in buildings, as well as
objects in outer space, underground, and deep in the ocean. (Sunico et al.,
2015)

can now take and edit pictures and videos. Create, manipulate and share works of
art, even composing music. You can-and may already be a digital artist.

 Computer/digital arts utilizes mechanical and electronic devices instead of
the artist’s own hands to create the desired images and effects. Thus, these are
art forms based on technology. In the modern age, personal devices such as
laptops, tablets, and Android phones have integrated the artistic capabilities of
large-scale computers. So now anyone can become a digital artist.
 Mobile Phone Art enables you to create original works of art for various
purposes. These can be personal photos and videos, and you can edit with a
large number of special effects, including visual effects as well as sound and
music effects. These can also be a school projects or reports, in which you
must combine pictures, include text or even insert simple animations.

MEDIA-BASED ART

In today's technology-driven world, these

extraordinary skills and abilities of electronic or
digital media enable imaginative artistic expression to
promote the development of traditional painting,
sculpture, and architecture. As technology develops
new devices, gadgets, and techniques, modern artists
and designers conform to them to enhance their
creative expression. The exploration of the advanced
procedures and patterns in photography, film, print
media, digital media, and product and industrial
design will be applied.

Photography as an Art
From the Greek “photos” (meaning light) and
“graphos” (meaning writing)
Focusing a camera on a subject and clicking the
shutter is photography as a process. The
photographer discerns the significant moment or a
unique expression, frames it in the camera
viewfinder with an eye for composition, and then
clicks the shutter. This process makes photography
as an art. (Sunico et al., 2015)

Photography as Communication
Photography in the modern art form is now seen as
more than just beautiful. It is also believed to be
one of the most powerful means of communication.

Digital Photography
Another way to create a unique image
is to capture it as a digital file first. In the
context of today's electronic technology, this
means taking pictures using a digital camera
or a device with a built-in camera, such as a
mobile phone, Android device, or tablet.

means of communication.

Point-and-Shoot Camera
 Has been overtaken by the magic of digital
photography.
 Automatically makes all the adjustments in
lighting, focus, zoom-in, and zoom-out, and
removal of “red-eye”.
 The user is given some leeway for slight
adjustments.
 Offers image enhancement features like adjusting color and brightness
imbalances, as well as sharpening or blurring the image.
 Offers unique effects like “fisheye” or filters that allow pre-setting of the photo
to be taken with a colored tint or a special texture.
 Allows the user to immediately review the photos taken without waiting for a
complex developing process.
 Can delete any unsatisfactory images while storing the good ones for future
needs. (Sunico et al., 2015)

Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) Camera

 Provides the filmless and instant review features of
a “point-and-shoot” type of digital camera.
 Gives the photographer much more artistic freedom
and control to select the camera settings to create
the desired final image with the preferred visual
effects. (Sunico et al., 2015)

Basic Tips for Taking Good Photographs

Whether you are using a point-and-shoot camera or a DSLR, there are basic
guidelines for capturing a good quality photographic image:
 Choose a good location. An interesting location can sometimes make the
difference between a good and a great photo.
 Check that the available background is relatively simple and not too cluttered
so that the focus will be on your chosen subject.
 Natural light in the outdoors or near a window is usually the most flattering or
effective for any kind of subject. Ideally, the best light for photos is within the
first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset.
 Avoid taking shots facing the light, as this would make your subject back-lit
and most of the details would be lost in shadow. (Sunico et al., 2015)

Media-Based Art in the 21st Century
Media art is constantly expanding, and new technologies are being used at a
rapid pace.
Open-source software is popularized and allows people to freely use and modify
existing software.
Video games and web interfaces such as Flicker, Myspace, YouTube, Facebook,
and Second Life become new materials for artworks.
Museums and other institutions begin to develop policies and procedures for
documentation and conservation strategies specific to media artworks.
(Sunico et al., 2015)
Computer Generated Images
If you want to create original images from
scratch, you may make your own illustrations
using specialized programs for image
generation and manipulation. (Sunico et al.,
2015)
Examples of Programs:

There are scaled-down versions of such programs specifically developed

for use on smaller, handheld units like your personal tablet or Android phone.
These enable you to perform virtually all of the tasks that a program like
Illustrator performs but, almost literally, in the palm of your hand. Many of these
come at a fraction of the cost of the more complex programs or, in some cases,
even for free. (Sunico et al., 2015)
Among such programs are:

Gimp Paint.net Inkscape Xara Extreme Artweaver Draw Plus

Pencil Picasa Paint Star Smooth Adobe Photoshop

Express

Corel Paintshop Pro X5
