1. Introduction
In today's competitive world one thing that has become scarce in our lives is
- 'TIME'. Time has become the most important commodity for working as
well as non-working segment of our society. In this age of growing
popularity of shopping malls due to time and resources constraint,
sometimes it becomes difficult to physically go out. Shopping is inevitable
for everyone whether we like it or not, as shopping is done right from basic
commodities to luxury goods. Hence the new concept that enables us to do
shopping at a click of a mouse is 'Online shopping'.
Today, the development of an increasingly modern era encourages system
changes. One of them is in the trading system and transacting online
(indirectly). The rapid development of information technology has created
new business opportunities in pursuit of business success. Internet
technology, for example, has made today's business borderless and timeless.
The use of the internet in business has changed from a function as an
electronic information exchange tool to a tool for strategic business
applications, such as: marketing, sales, and customer service. Marketing on
the Internet tends to break through various barriers, boundaries
The use of the internet for various business activities is called e-commerce.
Business activities carried out online may include marketing, promotion,
public relations, transactions, payments and scheduling of delivery of goods,
as well as the possibility of innovation in other online business activities in
line with the development of e-commerce technology itself. “E-commerce
can provide significant benefits to businesses in developing countries by
increasing their control over their place in the supply chain, thereby
increasing their market efficiency.” And “Internet retailers are constantly
striving to create better content and realistic shopping experiences with
technologies like augmented reality. As mobile commerce accelerates, more
users are buying from the palm of their hand.”
From the explanation above, it can be concluded that E-commerce or
electronic commerce is the activity of buying and selling goods and services
via the internet. In addition to buying and selling, many people use the
internet as a source of information to compare prices or just see the latest
products on offer before making an online purchase. E-Business is
sometimes used as another term for the same process. However, it is more
often used to define the broader process of how the Internet is changing the
way companies do business, the way they relate to customers and sellers,
and the way they think about functions such as marketing and logistics. Do
business electronically. If utilized and implemented properly, E-commerce is
one of the technologies that can produce business processes that provide
improvements and increase efficiency. Utilization of E-commerce-based
technology results in an increase to developing countries.
2. Example Online Shopping
With thousands of eCommerce apps available for shopping, people need to be
choosy when it comes to installing the best online shopping apps for their needs.
The most populous country in Southeast Asia by far, Indonesia is still in an early
stage of development when it comes to internet, mobile and digital technologies.
It is, therefore, one of the most sought-after markets globally for e-commerce,
with large local players and global heavyweights fighting for this enormous
growing market.
Here is a list of best online shopping apps available today for your shopping
needs. ( Here I select some example of Online Shopping in my country ).
Zalora Indonesia Bukalapak
OLX Indonesia Tokopedia
Lazada Shopee
JD.id Elevenia
BliBli Bhineka
3. Compare Online Shopping ( Tokopedia and Shopee )
Tokopedia
History
Tokopedia.com is one of the best online stores in Indonesia that carries a marketplace
business model. Since its launch until the end of 2015, Tokopedia’s basic services can
be used by everyone for free. With a vision to “Build a Better Indonesia Through the
Internet”.
Tokopedia has a program to support Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)
and individuals to develop their businesses by marketing their products
online. Tokopedia has succeeded in becoming one of Indonesia’s internet companies
with very rapid growth. Tokopedia also managed to make history as the first
technology company in Southeast Asia, which received an investment of USD 100
million or around Rp 1.2 trillion from Sequoia Capital and SoftBank Internet and
Media Inc.
Business Products
The marketplace is Tokopedia's best-known product. Tokopedia provides a free C2C
business platform for merchants and buyers. The marketplace helps merchants reach
more audience than other channels. There are also official stores for well-known
brands to do their B2C business. Through its marketplace products, Tokopedia offers
millions of products in 25 categories.
Tokopedia also provides digital products such as credit, BPJS payments, utility
payments, telephone payments, credit cards, flight tickets, event tickets, games
vouchers, and many more.
Shopee
History
Shopee is Indonesia's best online shop and electronic commerce headquartered in
Singapore under the SEA Group (formerly known as Garena. Shopee was first
launched in Singapore in 2015, and has since expanded its reach to Malaysia,
Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines. Due to the mobile
element that is built on the concept of global electronic commerce, Shopee is one
of the “5 most disruptive e-commerce startups” published by Tech In Asia.
In 2015, Shopee was first launched in Singapore as the first social mobile-centric
marketplace where users can browse, shop and sell at any time. Integrated with
logistics and payment support which aims to make online shopping easy and safe
for both sellers and buyers.
Business Model
Shopee first started as primarily a consumer-to-consumer (C2C) marketplace but
has since moved into both a C2C and business-to-consumer (B2C) hybrid model.
Shopee partners with over 70 courier service providers across its markets to
provide logistical support for its users. In Singapore, it collaborated with logistics
startup NinjaVan for item pickup and delivery. Other delivery partners in the
region include Pos Malaysia and Pos Indonesia.
Shopee and Tokopedia comparison. which one is good ?
Company Origin
Shopee is an e-commerce platform that was launched in 2015 by a Singapore-
based company. The application is available for iOS and Android operating
systems. One of the attractions of Shopee is the advertisements that often feature
well-known public figures such as CR7 to K-Pop stars.
Tokopedia is a marketplace created by the nation's children which is identical to
the green color. Introduced to the public in 2015, the startup labeled Unicorn
decided to merge with online transportation service, Gojek, starting in 2021
Items for Sale
Shopee and Tokopedia have different market shares, especially in terms of
product types. Based on research, Tokopedia is superior in terms of selling
electronic goods, medical devices, beauty, to room decoration needs.
Meanwhile, the characteristics of Shopee products are more about cute knick-
knacks, outfits, the latest styles, to items that are currently hype in the market.
Price and Postage
In terms of price and shipping costs. According to my review and experience as
a user, Shopee often offers free shipping compared to Tokopedia. In addition,
the prices of their products are also more affordable.
Even so, Shopee's free shipping feature makes it difficult for sellers, and has an
impact on courier revenue. This is being widely reported by the mainstream
media and has become a trending topic on Twitter.
App Features
When it comes to application features, maybe Shopee is the winner. Because, as
users we can enjoy various games. In addition, Shopee also has the Shopee
Paylater feature, where users can get money loans.
Unfortunately, those two things are not available on Tokopedia. So it's not
surprising when the millennial generation is asked which is the best online
shopping application Shopee or Tokopedia, on average they choose Shopee.
Strengths and Weaknesses
The advantages of Shopee compared to Tokopedia are many. One of the things
that users like is the variety of attractive products. In addition, there are also
Shopee Paylater features and games to get points or balances.
Although there are many advantages, it does not mean that Shopee is free from
disadvantages. E-commerce, which is identical to the orange color, is often
complained of by users because the application often has errors, the number of
shipping requirements, and the seller is dishonest.
After knowing the advantages of the orange, then there are also the advantages
of the green one to find out which Shopee or Tokopedia are better. One of the
most interesting is the promotion as well as the application with the most
convenient interface among other e-commerce. Most Comfortable UI/UX, More
Diverse Products, Lots of Interesting Promos, Professional and Trusted.
Tokopedia's most prominent weakness is in the application, which is often
repaired, making it difficult for users who want to buy dream goods. In addition,
many spam products are also a PR that must be immediately resolved by
Tokpedia.
CONCLUSION
Actually for consumers the most important thing is price. If there is a marketplace that
offers a lower price, that's the one to choose. However, not a few also look at the
completeness of goods and shipping costs.
And the most prominent difference between these two platforms is that we can use
Shopee throughout Asia, while Tokopedia can only be used in Indonesia.
So, basically all marketplaces have advantages and disadvantages. To determine which is
the best, between Tokopedia or Shopee, it's up to individual tastes.
