When we talk about slavery, Islam as two view on slavery which one is acceptable and the other is

rejected. In Islam we have the jahiliyah period which we called the period if ignorance, this period was
the period before Islam. During this jahiliyah period, slaves are acquired via the following methods,

Kidnapping, selling of children by parents deu to poverty, waging war against wick group of people,
inability to pay debt and so on. During this period slaves where treated like animals, properties which
one can do whatever they wish to without questioning also females slaves are set as sex figures and use
for prostitution. All this act goes on because slaves are term as nothing but properties. When Islam
came, Islam changes this act of slavery and set it to be a better and slaves are not to be viewed as
properties but responsibilities among masters. How did Islamic achieve this, Islam prohibited all the
aspects of acquiring slaves and made it lawful to aquire slaves while defending ones nation during the
time of war. Which means during the era of war, slaves can be aquire till the time there won't be any
war threats from such groups of people waging war. Allah said in the Quran [Quran Chapter 8:67-69] 67.
It is not for a prophet to take prisoners before he has subdued the land. You desire the materials of this
world, but God desires the Hereafter. God is Strong and Wise. 68. Were it not for a predetermined
decree from God, an awful punishment would have afflicted you for what you have taken. 69. So
consume what you have gained, legitimate and wholesome; and remain conscious of God. God is
Forgiving and Merciful.

Prophet Muhammad pbuh does not want to kill the captive of the war, due to the type of heart Allah
gave to him, during the battle of badr, some prisoners where captured and the Prophet pbuh seek the
advice from his followers on what to do with them, Umar stood and suggests that the Prophet pbuh
should cut off their head, the Prophet frown at that decision and asked for the second time, Umar stood
up and made the same decision prophet Muhammad pbuh did same and the third time Abubakr stood
and said the Prophet pbuh should collect ransom from them and set them free. Although this was a nice
judgment to the Prophet pbuh but was a wrong decision to make because this same set of people still
have the chance to attack again then Allah reveals the above verse to prophet Muhammad pbuh and
said to prophet Muhammad pbuh that he would have face punishment for setting the captive free if not
that Allah had already granted him the permission to enjoy from war victory.

Now it will be a wrong judgment to say it's a crime to keep war captive as slave because they're human.
If this captive are truly human, why would taking life of others for practicing a faith require death
penalty. To my own judgment keeping the defenseless captive as slave is the most merciful decisions the
Muslims would take than cutting their head of and setting them free when they have what it takes to
buy their freedom and collecting ransom from them would only be wise decisions when there is no
threat of those people attacking again.

How did Muhammad pbuh make different? Slaves in Islam are not properties but enemies and I am sure
no leader would have been so merciful to treat enemies the ways prophet Muhammad pbuh treated the
enemies. According to the rules of of war there is not fair in the rules of war as long it will keep you alive
and I have said earlier Islam only permit keeping slave during war if a Muslim should keep slaves outside
war then he as done something wrong. Rules governing masters and slaves (enemies) in Islam are as
follows.
1. Slaves as the right to own properties,

2. slaves can work earn money to buy their freedom,

3. Master must provide food and shelter for slaves in their care and not put them in a cage or left to
starve (I would say in Islam master serve slaves more than the slaves serves Master).

4. Master must not award difficult task to slave unless he assist the slave in carrying out the task,

5. slaves as the right to marry and be married or be the right hand posses of his master,

6. female slaves must not be use for prostitution and if any master should force a slave to prostitution
such master shall face the punishment in the Hereafter,

7. master must not bit slaves except for a serious offense committed (for example female slave was set
free after she report her master for striking her face for no good reason in another report Abubakr was
permitted to bit a slaves for being careless with Abubakr properties (horse and weapon)).

8. Masters are to be nice to slaves

9. Zakat paid by the rich Muslims should be use as setting slaves free and so on.

[Quran 2:177] Righteousness does not consist of turning your faces towards the East and the West. But
righteous is he who believes in God, and the Last Day, and the angels, and the Scripture, and the
prophets. Who gives money, though dear, to near relatives, and orphans, and the needy, and the
homeless, and the beggars, and for the freeing of slaves; those who perform the prayers, and pay the
obligatory charity, and fulfill their promise when they promise, and patiently persevere in the face of
persecution, hardship, and in the time of conflict. These are the sincere; these are the pious.

[Quran 4:36] Worship God, and ascribe no partners to Him, and be good to the parents, and the
relatives, and the orphans, and the poor, and the neighbor next door, and the distant neighbor, and the
close associate, and the traveler, and your servants. God does not love the arrogant showoff.

[Quran 9:60] Charities are for the poor, and the destitute, and those who administer them, and for
reconciling hearts, and for freeing slaves, and for those in debt, and in the path of God, and for the
traveler in need—an obligation from God. God is All-Knowing, Most Wise.

[Quran Chapter 24] 32. And wed the singles among you, and those who are fit among your servants and
maids. If they are poor, God will enrich them from His bounty. God is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
[Quran Chapter 24] 33. And let those who do not find the means to marry abstain, until God enriches
them from His bounty. If any of your servants wish to be freed, grant them their wish, if you recognize
some good in them. And give them of God's wealth which he has given you. And do not compel your
girls to prostitution, seeking the materials of this life, if they desire to remain chaste. Should anyone
compel them—after their compulsion, God is Forgiving and Merciful.

The rules of acquiring slaves in Islam made it easy to put end to slavery and ill treatment of humam.
Thank God the world we are today, a world free from war, slavery had been wiped out of Islam for
Muslims have no reasons to own a slaves. According to the UN, slavery was admonished and they were
successful in making this rules and at the same time not successful. Prophet pbuh was fully successful in
admonishing slavery by setting a single rules of keeping slaves and this is part of Islamic law which no
Muslim must break. But in the western law, where slavery was openly admonished, people still keep
slaves, human trafficking among none Muslims still exist, kidnapping among none Muslims still exist. As
at my own record, over 100 citizens of my country were tricked into slavery in Europe, North America
and South America, they were deceived by promising them good life over and good jobs. Some female
came home with pregnancy and according to the testimony of those who escape and brought back to
my country, they said they are still more who as not yet escape. This set of people are the once who has
the highest number lf slavery in the world and they are the same set of people who sat to set the law of
say no to slavery and yet their citizens still takes slave. When this people came with the idea of no
slavery how did master set their slaves free? Did they just said all slaves should go free? No slaves where
given the privilege to pay for their freedom this practice was also part of Islamic law of setting slaves
free before they thought of saying no to slave. I will say Islam was the first guide to put end to slavery.

To me keeping your enemy alone as slave slavery and treating them the Islam ordered, I see nothing evil
in it but an act of mercy
