CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1. Background
Parts of Speech in English means word types or word classes. Called “Parts of Speech”
– parts of speech or parts of sentences (remember, basically sentences in language are
sentences that are spoken, not written) – because these words are an entity that is needed to
form a sentence , regardless of what their respective duties or functions are. So, these words
are the “basic ingredients” in a “building” sentence.
So, these words are the “basic ingredients” in a “building” sentence, not the
“function” of the word in the sentence. Why is that? Because a word can have several (more
than one) function in a sentence.
There are several types of Parts of speech, namely Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adjective,
Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction, Interjection. Each type has a different meaning and function.
However, in this paper we will only discuss two types of Parts of speech, namely Preposition
and Interjection.

CHAPTER 2
DISCUSSION
1.Interjection
A. Definition of Interjection
Interjections are short words used to express someone's emotions or feelings which are usually
followed by an exclamation point.
B. Interjection Function
Interjection words are often used only in spoken language and are very rarely used in written
language, unless they are written in the form of quotations. Interjection is widely used to express
different feelings.
C. Example Interjection
The following is a list of commonly used English interjections and maybe you often hear or even use
them in everyday life
Alas (aduh) Menyatakan rasa sedih Alas! Why must that accident happen?
Interjections / exclamations in English are not always followed by an exclamation point (!),
but can also be followed by a comma (,) to refine the meaning / a more subtle expression of
feelings. Exclamation marks are often used to strengthen the tone of speech or to convey stronger
feelings such as emotion, anger, surprise, etc.
Examples of interjections in conversations:
Hey => A: hey, are you ok?
B: yes, I'm OK. Don't worry about me.
Oh => A: Did Jane come to your house last night?
B: Oh yes of course.
We had a nice chit-chat last night. When inserted in a sentence, interjection is just an
additional word that describes the emotions / feelings of the speaker. Example :
• Oops, I made a mistake! (Startled)
• Wow, that's amazing! (Impressed)
• Auch, I cut my finger! (Sick)
In writing, interjections can be words, phrases, or single sentences and are usually separated
by commas or exclamation points.
There are two types of interjections, namely in the form of words/phrases and single
sentences. Interjections in the form of words/phrases can stand alone and can also be used in a
sentence as a complement, while what and how interjections are usually located in front of a single
phrase or sentence.
Interjection in the form of words or phrases:
o Oh! •Bullshit!
o Ah!
o Eh!
o Hi
o Bravo!
o Yell!
o Goodbye!
o Help!
o Hurrah!
o Hey!
o Oh, my God!
o Pssst…
o Wonderful!
o How beautiful!
o Damn it
o How interesting!
o How strange!
o How hard!
o I have ever gone to Bali, how beautiful.
The words “what” and “how” can mean how, how much, really or other interjections that are
appropriate to the situation and condition. Interjections that are joined in sentences can have
different meanings. For example, the word “ah” does not only state one expression, but can have
several other meanings or intentions. Example:
Interjection itself is also a short speech used to express emotions. This English interjection is
one of the eight parts of speech.
D. Interjection Usage
Interjection, which is used more in speaking than in writing (very rarely in formal or academic
writing), can stand alone or be included in a sentence. If it is in a sentence, the interjection has no
or almost no grammatical relationship with the sentence
E. Punctuation on Interjection
CHAPTER 3
