MATA33H3S Calculus for Management II Winter 2022

Syllabus and Lecture Schedule - 2 pages

We will try to follow the schedule below in the lectures. However, it can happen that a particular
lecture might be somewhat behind or ahead of the schedule on occasion. This can be caused by
slight variations on emphasis on different topics and by reasons beyond control (i.e. video-taping
tecnical issues, Covid-19 pandemic).

1. Week 1, Monday Jan 10 - Friday Jan 14 : Course Introduction. Linear Programming:


linear function, feasible set (region), feasible points, types of feasible set (non-empty, standard,
bounded), Fundamental Theorem of Linear Programming. (Sections 7.1 and 7.2).

2. Week 2, Monday Jan 17 - Friday Jan 21 : Fundamental Theorem of Linear Pro-


gramming continued, unbounded feasible set problems, multiple optimal solutions (Sections
7.1 and 7.2 continued).

3. Week 3, Monday Jan 24 - Friday Jan 28 : Matrices, matrix operations and arithmetic,
applications (Sections 6.1 - 6.3).

4. Week 4, Monday Jan 31 - Friday Feb 4 : Solving systems of linear equations by


matrix methods, row reduction, the reduced matrix, homogeneous systems (Sections 6.4 and
6.5).

5. Week 5, Monday Feb 7 - Friday Feb 11 : Matrix inverse, calculation method by row
reduction, using the inverse to solve a system of linear equations (Section 6.6).

6. Week 6, Monday Feb 14 - Friday Feb 18 The determinant of a square matrix, calculation
methods, application to invertibility, Cramer’s rule (Lecture notes only, no text material).

Reading Week/Family Day Holiday is from Saturday Feb 18 to Friday Feb 25, inclusive. There
are no MATA33 lectures, tutorials, or other activites that week.

7. Week 7, Monday Feb 28 - Friday Mar 4: Functions of several variables, level curve,
partial derivatives, geometric interpretation, calculation methods (Sections 2.8, 17.1).

8. Week 8, Monday Mar 7 - Friday Mar 11 : Elementary applications of partial deriva-


tives, implicit partial differentiation (not in text), higher-order partial derivatives (Sections
17.2, 17.3, Lecture Notes)

9. Week 9, Monday Mar 14 - Friday Mar 18 : Chain rules (not in text), optimization of
functions of several variables, 2nd derivative test, applications (Lecture Notes, Section 17.4).

10. Week 10, Monday Mar 21 - Friday Mar 25 : Optimization of functions of several
variables continued, Hessian matrix, applications (Section 17.4 and Lecture notes).

11. Week 11, Monday Mar 28 - Friday Apr 1 Constrained optimization, Lagrange multi-
pliers, applications (Section 17.5).

12. Week 12, Monday Apr 4 - Friday Mar 8 Double and triple integrals, changing the order
of integration (Section 17.6).

Use of the internet You are encouraged to make use of the internet to supplement our course
textbook, lectures, assignments, etc. Practically every concept and idea in our course can be found
via the internet as a pdf document, or a video, or a slide presentation.
