Used when talking about N1's name, nationality or profession.

N1 は N2 じゃないです。
ですか。

N1 は なん ですか。

Examples
①わたしは　がくせいです。
Watashi wa gakusee desu.
I'm a student.

②わたしは　キムです。
Watashi wa Kimu desu.
I'm Kim.

③ヤンさんは　マレーシアじんです。
Yan-san wa Mareeshia jin desu.
Ms. Yan is Malaysian.

④わたしは　かいしゃいんじゃないです。
Watashi wa kaishain janai desu.
I'm not an office worker.

⑤A: キムさんは　かんこくじんですか。
 A: Kimu-san wa Kankoku jin desu ka.
A: Ms. Kim, are you Korean?

B: はい、かんこくじんです。
B: Hai, Kankoku jin desu.
B: Yes, I am.

⑥A: きむらさんは　がくせいですか。
A: Kimura-san wa gakusee desu ka.
A: Mr. Kimura, are you a student?

B: いいえ、がくせいじゃないです。かいしゃいんです。
B: Iie gakusee janai desu. Kaishain desu.
B: No, I'm not a student. I'm an office worker.

⑦A: おしごとは　なんですか。
A: Oshigoto wa nandesu ka.
A: What's your job?

B: エンジニアです。
B: Enjinia desu.
B: I'm an engineer.

Commentary
A.「Nです」 is affirmative. 「Nじゃないです」 is negative. 「Nですか」 is interrogative.
B.The 「は」 in 「N1は」 is pronounced "wa".
C.In cases when it is understood what N1 is, 「N1 は」 is sometimes omitted. (⑤⑥⑦)
