OCEANARIUM

If there is magic on this planet , it is contained in water.

- Loren Eiseley
W HAT I S AN O C EANAR I UM ?
▪ An Oceanarium can be a marine mammal park as well as large scale aquarium
presenting an ocean habitat with marine life: An aquarium simulates a water
habitat; for instance a river lake or sea; but only the submerged area of these
natural habitats.
▪ "Establishments where collection of living aquatic animals and plants are
exhibited or studied." An object or place in which aquatic animals, principally
fish are kept captive for public or private exhibition"

AIM:
▪ This thesis aims to expose humans the depths of marine life and its need
for preservation and conservation.
NEED
▪ The lack of awareness about the marine
environment, pollution happening in the
oceans all over the world, thousands of
endangered marine species uncontrolled
human activities in the oceans ; specially
fishing practices indicate the urgency of a
centre that promotes education and research
on the marine environment, which can also
support tourism as an international tourist
destination.
▪ The amalgamation between tourism and
research, requires an architectural
translation, an exploration into innovative
design and technologies.
SCOPE
▪ Recreation as well as education.
▪ Provides a platform for education through
entertainment .
▪ Human beings believe in the theory of out of
sight out of mind providing a window towards
the water world
▪ It will somehow create a soft corner for the
species living there and will motivate us not to
harm their habitat.
▪ For researchers and research institutes it
provides vast research possibilities, which is not
only beneficial for them but also helps provide
conversation possibilities for the species.

NOCTURNAL ZOO

Biodiversity can't be maintained by protecting a few species in a zoo,

or by preserving greenbelts or national parks.
W HAT I S N O CTU RNALITY?
▪ Nocturnality is an animal behavior characterized by being active during the
night and sleeping during the day.
▪ The common adjective is "nocturnal", versus diurnal meaning the opposite.
... Others, such as bushbabies and (some) bats, can function only at night.

AIM:
▪ This design aims to connect nocturnal animals to their habitat fulfilling their
social, physical, psychological and natural behavioral needs.
▪ Also helps humans to understand nocturnal animals – behavior and pattern.
NEED
▪ Nocturnal species make up more than half of the world’s land-dwelling
vertebrates but often are cryptic and difficult to observe in the wild .
▪ Zoos provide an opportunity for close encounters with nocturnal animals, but
their care in captivity poses unique challenges. Nocturnal species are
generally housed on reversed light cycles in zoos.
▪ Artificial lighting need to be designed to simulate nighttime conditions in
exhibits during the day so that nocturnal animals are active when zoo visitors
and staff can observe them.
▪ Lighting in nocturnal exhibits need to be carefully designed to entrain the
animal’s circadian system to the reversed light cycle, providing enough light
for zoo visitors to view nocturnal species without overwhelming the animals’
sensitive visual systems or suppressing their activity.
SCOPE
▪ Provides a platform for education through entertainment .
▪ The scope of this thesis focuses on the impact of animal exhibit design on both
animals and visitors.
▪ It illustrates how a well-conceived animal exhibit design process could provide
animals with a place where they can express their natural behavior and visitors
with a rich wildlife experience.

THE SPECTRUM

Biodiversity can't be maintained by protecting a few species in a zoo,

INTRODUCTION
▪ Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a broad term used to describe a group of
neurodevelopmental disorders.
▪ ASD is found in individuals around the world, regardless of race, culture, or
economic background.
▪ According to the Centres for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), autism
does occur more often in boys than in girls, with a 4 to 1 male-to-female
ratio.
▪ The CDC estimated in 2014 that nearly 1 in 59 children have been identified
with ASD.
▪ Autism is a behaviourally defined disorder characterized by impaired social
interaction, delayed and disordered language and isolated areas of interest.
AIMS
▪ To design a center for autistic children so as to create an enabling
environment comprising of learning spaces, rehabilitation center and
accommodation.
▪ This study aims to develop an innovative tool and technique for the sensory
environments of children with autism.
▪ This thesis aims to define and describe behavioural impact on spatial
sequencing, appropriate building materials, acoustics, colours and textures,
circulation patterns, lighting and ventilation.
▪ This thesis makes an effort to understand the psychology of children with
Autism and attempts to provide an appropriate solution for it.
NEED
▪ The need for a fresh approach in designing educational and rehabilitative spaces for
a supportive environmental intervention of autistic children.
▪ To understand the impact of environment on teaching strategies, address needs, fears
and comforts of children with Autism and implement the learning on the design.
SCOPE
▪ To identify their deficits and understand the role played by architectural elements in
their intervention.
▪ To understand environmental implications for teaching strategies used for children with
autism in educational spaces.
▪ To address the enabling aspects of environment that might improve functional
performance of children with autism in educational spaces and rehabilitation spaces. For
example- Visual Character, Spatial sequencing and its quality, Escape areas, Clutter free
spaces, Colour, Texture, Materials, Acoustics etc.
▪ To address their needs and design accommodation based on their behavioural aspects,
cultural and social aspects.
▪ To understand the impact of existing structures on the intervention of autistic children
