Christmas Carol

By: Charles Dickens

The author was influenced through his experiences from his own past. He was inspired to write a
story when we visited a school and while walking, he saw illiterate street children. He was touched by
the lot of poor children. The author relates himself in to his own work. He tried to do a way for these poor
children to lift them in their conditions. He decided to publish an inexpensive political pamphlet
tentatively titled, “An appeal to the people of England, on behalf of the poor man’s child”, but his mind
was changed. He conclude that the most effective way to reach the broadest segment of the population
with his social concerns about poverty and injustice was to write a deeply felt Christmas narrative rather
than polemical pamphlets and essays. In his work, Dickens had a sister named Fanny who had disabled
son named Henry. Tiny Timy did not take his name from Fanny’s child but, the actual aspects of Tiny
Tim’s character are taken from Henry. He used Tim’s characteristics in his work and he trying to connect
it in his experiences into the present. The relationship between Scrooge and Tiny Tim is a condensed
depiction of the relationship between two social classes: the wealthy and the impoverished. He also writes
that Scrooge may have been influenced by his conflicting feelings for his father, who he both loved and
demonised. . He picture out those possible things that may happen behind poverty. Dickens also cited a
solution for those poor people especially to those children who cannot afford going to school. Because in
his life he also suffered financial difficulties so he needs to stop and work for a mean time.
The characters are trying to highlights the problems in the current society. They demonstrate how
problems such as a greed, isolation, science and class are dividing in this place. When we met Scrooge for
the first time, he was obsessed with money and completely alone because he distances himself from the
rest of society. Everyone is afraid to talk to him because of his greediness. Scrooge is selfish in the sense
that he refuses to contribute to the charity for the poor. It shows how he only thinks for himself.
Characters also emphasises the importance of society to lack after each other, irrespective of class-social
responsibility. Dickens made the story with a two types of living-upper class and the lower class. There is
a big impact between them.. Upper class are shown to be selfish and financially obsessed, living in luxury
and only looking after themselves. Scrooge is included in this class. A lower class struggled to make
ends meet and was paid very low pages and often died very young-this is the crucial to our understanding
of the story. They are desperate, living in horrible conditions with little money and foods but appreciate of
what they have and united-Fred and Bob. All of these are the main problems that we encounter in our life.
The author wants to impart his reader that money is not the most important for living. It is your
love and how you deal with those people around you. It is on how you treat them equally. We all know
that money has a big impact in every one’s life. Sometimes it may lead us into harm. But it depends on
how to handle and use it. In the story of Christmas Carol, despite their lack of financial stability, Dickens
shows how lower class are superior, underlining their happiness, resilience and the way they care for each
other. Poverty is not the hindrance to be happy. It shows there that money can’t buy happiness. Scrooge is
rich but definitely unhappy because he doesn’t have friends. Scrooge said that he hates Christmas because
it owes his money. But for the other characters they enjoying Christmas. Dickens want to acknowledge as
to inspire with those several aspects of Christmas, such as family gatherings, seasonal foods and drinks,
dancing, games and festive generosity of spirit. The author highlights the unifying impact of Christmas,
bringing people together and encouraging them to think of things greater than themselves. Learn to share
of what you have to others without expecting anything coming from them. We should not be selfish. It is
better to share your blessings than to receive.
The philosophy of life of the author is that “Poverty is not the hindrance to success.” All he
wants is to escape towards poverty. Therefore the opportunity is in our hands. Poverty should be our
aspirations to work hard for a better life. Dickens suffers financial difficulties before yet he strives in
order to change the condition of life he has. He sacrificed many things, including his studies just for him
to gain success. Success may come unto us in varied ways. It’s just a matter of how we strive to make
things possible. The possibility of things to come through depends on the connection we have on it. It
takes more courage, determination and perseverance to change the life we have. Don’t lost hope if we
faced financial difficulties instead we must be optimistic and be positive and tell to yourself that “I can.”
