The Hobbit

The Hobbit is a trilogy I grew up with. It was the highlight of my childhood. Watching it again brought
back excitement of the magical world I always wish to exist.

The trilogy is based on the novel “The Hobbit” by J.R.R. Tolkien, written in 1937. It is a film series
consisting of three high fantasy adventure films directed by Peter Jackson. The three films are “The
Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)”,” The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)”, and “The
Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)”.

The film is set in the fictional world of Middle-earth, sixty years before the beginning of The “Lord of the
Rings”, and follow hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), who is convinced by the wizard Gandalf the
Grey (Ian McKellen) to accompany thirteen dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), on a
quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch).

The movie starts with Bilbo writing a book about his memories. We jump a couple of years in Bilbo’s
past when he first meets Gandalf the Grey. Gandalf makes a sign on Bilbo’s door, ehich will lead the
thirteen dwarves to a meeting.
As the plot moves on from the bright toned scenes more exciting and unexpected andventures are to
enchant the viewers.

There are many creatures, humans, elves, dwarves, hobbits, ents, trolls and dragons, but interestingly
enough not many female characters.

The whole movie might look weird as it was shot with a special camera developed of the founder of
Oakley sunglasses, at 48 frames per second.
The music, composed and produced by Howard Shore, utilizes number of leitmotivs and various unusual
instruments.

Some of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy fans do not like “The Hobbit” trilogy. These who read the books
would understand why. I read all the books and I still would prefer “The Hobbit” to “The Lord of the
Rings”.

If you are looking for an outstanding and intense fantasy adventure, then you should definitely see this
trilogy. It is a movie that I would not mind rewatching countless times.
