Introduction

Poe builds suspense in a collection of his short stories with a

number of techniques and points. A few of these stories are:
Cask of Amontillado, The Black Cat, The Red Death and the
oval portrait. One of these points is foreshadowing this is
shown in the Cask of Amontillado and The Red Death

Para 1
For example, Poe builds suspense in a number of his short
stories using an unreliable narrator. For instance in the Cask
of Amontillado Montressor is unreliable as he is clearly mad,
you see this from repetition of him laughing at someone he
has just buried alive “he he he he he he” and also the fact he
buried them alive. The narrator in the Tell Tale Heart is also
quite clearly mad as he always repeats how he is not mad
“Why would you say Im mad?”. In the oval portrait the
narrator could be unreliable as he is injured, possible making
him delusional/ mentally unwell. This use of unreliable
narrator builds suspense as we don’t know whats coming
next.
