continuously regulate power to the critical load. The input and output converters shall be capable of full
battery recharge while simultaneously providing regulated power to the load for all line and load
conditions within the range of the UPS specifications.
B. Battery: Upon failure of the AC input source, the critical load shall continue being supplied by the
output inverter, which shall derive its power from the battery system. There shall be no interruption in
power to the critical load during both transfers to battery operation and retransfers from battery to
normal operation.
C. Recharge: Upon restoration of the AC input source, the input converter and output inverter shall
simultaneously recharge the battery and provide regulated power to the critical load.
D. Static Bypass: The static bypass shall be used to provide transfer of critical load from the Inverter
output to the bypass source. This transfer, along with its retransfer, shall take place with no power
interruption to the critical load. In the event of an emergency, this transfer shall be an automatic
function.
E. Maintenance Bypass: The system shall be equipped with an embedded make-before-break
Maintenance Bypass (MB) switch to electrically isolate the power converters of the UPS during routine
maintenance and service of the UPS. The MB shall completely isolate both the UPS input and output
connections. An eventual external manual bypass can be connected outside the UPS with the
possibility of logic interlock or coordination signal with the static bypass inside the UPS.

2.4. ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS

A. Input power converter:

1. The input power converters of the system are housed within the removable power modules, and
shall constantly control the power absorbed from the mains input of the system, to provide the
necessary UPS power for precise regulation of the DC bus voltage, battery charging, and Main
Inverter regulated output power.
2. Input Current Total Harmonic Distortion: The input current THD shall be held to 3% or less and
input PF>0.99 at full system, while providing conditioned power to the critical load bus, and
charging the batteries under steady-state operating conditions. This shall be true while supporting
loads of both a linear or non-linear type. This shall be accomplished with no additional filters,
3. Input Voltage Monitoring:
a. The input converter shall monitor the input voltage in order to switch the UPS on battery
run in case of voltage variation out of nominal range and synchronize, in imposed range,
the output frequency with the input one in order to disable or enable possibility of the
automatic bypass intervention.
b. The input converter shall monitor also the input voltage and frequency variation
accordingly with the imposed range, in case of input generator coupling.
4. Charging:
a. The battery charging shall be the summary of effects of the single chargers distributed in
power modules. Every charger shall be synchronized with the others.
a. The battery charging method shall be based on a automatic multi steps cycle with boost +
float + sleep + equalizing steps. Direct measurement and monitoring on batteries will
regulate the battery charging voltage and current in order to optimize battery life and
usage.
b. Eventual additional charger modules can be installed in free power modules slots in the
cabinet in order to reduce the recharge time.
c. The total quantity and capacity of the connected battery set shall be configured in the UPS
control panel in order to allow the UPS to properly charge and monitor the batteries. This
will allow the calculation of the real battery status and the relevant real available
autonomy accordingly with the real connected load.
d. The battery charging circuits shall remain active when in requested Static Bypass and in
Normal Operation.
e. The battery chargers shall be able to recharge batteries in any conditions where the input
mains is present (battery will be charged also when UPS is off, or in Eco Mode )
5. Cold Start: The UPS shall allow to be set, by display, in order to start up without mains but only
with batteries
6. Auto restart: after the end of autonomy shutdown, at the return of the normal mains, the UPS
shall be able to restart automatically in on line mode. Furthermore, it shall be possible to set a
delay of the auto restart in order to charge the batteries up to a desired level of capacity in order to
have a minimum autonomy in case of sudden black out after the return of the mains.

7. Back-feed Protection: The logic controller of the UPS must be able to detect an eventual voltage
feedback on the input bypass line. Consequently a warning message of the back feed must
appear on the display and a signal contact must activate a back feed protection contactor in the up
stream line accordingly with IEC/EN62040-1.

B. Output inverter:
1. The UPS output inverter shall constantly recreate the UPS output voltage waveform by converting
the DC bus voltage to AC voltage through a set of IGBT power converters. In both normal
operation and battery operation, the output inverters shall create an output voltage independent
of the mains input voltage. Input voltage anomalies such as brown-outs, spikes, surges, sags,
and outages shall not affect the amplitude or sinusoidal nature of the recreated output voltage
sine wave of the output inverters.
2. Overload Capability: The output power converters shall be capable to run in overload conditions,
of up to 150% of system capacity, for 60 seconds in normal operation. Should over-loads persist
past the outlined time limitation, the critical load will be switched to the automatic static bypass
output of the UPS.
3. Output Contactor: The output inverter shall be provided with an output mechanical contactor to
provide physical isolation of the inverter from the critical bus. With this feature a power module
with failed inverter shall be disconnected the critical bus.
4. Battery Protection: The inverter shall be provided with monitoring and control circuits to limit the
level of discharge on the battery system accordingly with the current level supplied by batteries
during the discharge.
5. Redundancy: The modular architecture of the UPS shall allows redundant configurations with
more power modules than minimum needed for the load power. All the power modules run in
power sharing with the capability to continuously supply the critical load also in case of failed
components in one or more power modules.

.
C. Static Bypass:
1. Inside each Power Modules shall be present a static bypass switch. This distributed static
by-pass shall provide no break transfer of the critical load from the Inverter output to the
static bypass input source during times where maintenance is required, or the inverter
cannot support the critical bus. Such times may be due to prolonged or severe overloads,
or UPS failure. The UPS, power modules and their static bypass switch shall constantly
monitor, as well as the bypass source voltage, and inhibit potentially unsuccessful
transfers to static bypass from taking place.
2. The distributed static bypass will guarantee the automatic bypass intervention also in
case of failure of one the power modules
3. As design of the static switch power path shall consist of Silicon Controlled Rectifiers
(SCR) with a continuous duty rating of 150% of the UPS output rating.
4. Automatic Transfers: An automatic transfer of load to static bypass shall take place
whenever the load on the critical bus exceeds the overload rating of the UPS. Automatic
transfers of the critical load from static bypass back to normal operation shall take place
when the overload condition is removed from the critical bus output of the system.
Automatic transfers of load to static bypass shall also take place if for any reason the UPS
cannot support the critical bus.
5. Manual Transfers: Manually initiated transfers to and from static bypass shall be initiated
through the UPS display interface.
6. Overloads: The static bypass shall be rated and capable of handling overloads equal to at
least than 150% of the rated system output continuously. For instantaneous overloads
caused by strong inrush current from magnetic devices, or short circuit conditions, the
static by-pass shall be capable of sustaining overloads for the time needed to the
intervention of upstream circuit breaker protection. In manual or other technical
documentation of the UPS must be indicated the recommended type of circuit breakers
and the passing trough energy capability (I2t of the internal bypass path).

for the bypass, independent than the input for Power Modules rectifiers, any additional
accessories shall be needed to set up the UPS with a dedicated input for the bypass..
9. End of autonomy on bypass: In case of dedicated independent input line for the bypass
which supply adequate voltage while the normal mains is down (UPS on battery run), the
UPS shall give the possibility to switch the load on bypass at the end of the autonomy.
intervention.

mains trough the bypass and power converters without load, ready to immediately supply
the load in On Line Mode in case the input bypass mains is out of tolerance.
