Introduction
1. To introduce the basic concepts of electrical circuit fundamentals necessary for mechanical engineers.
2. To introduce active and passive components in an electrical circuit networks and the network analysis
techniques.
3. To introduce the design and analysis of electrical circuit with DC and AC power.
4. To introduce digital logic gates and their applications for mechanical engineers.
5. To familiarize mechanical engineers with electronic devices structure and their applications.
Course Contents
 Week 1: Basic Concepts
Voltage, Current, Power and Energy, Circuit elements (R, L, C, ideal operational amplifiers, ideal
transformer), Independent and Dependent Sources.
 Week 2: Basic Concept
Kirchhoff's Laws, Series and Parallel Combinations of Elements, Voltage Division and Current
Division.
 Week 3 & 4: Electrical Networks
Nodal Analysis and Examples, Mesh Analysis and Examples
 Week 5: Circuit Equivalents
Linearity, Superposition, Source Transformations, Thevenin's Theorem, Norton's Theorem.
 Week 6 : RC Circuits
 Week 7 : RL Circuits
 Week 8: RLC Circuits
 Week 9: Introduction to Semiconductors
Types of materials, semiconductors, types and characteristics of semiconductors, pn junction
characteristics, diodes and ideal diode.
 Week 10: Diodes and Applications
Terminal characteristics of diodes, voltage regulation, reverse breakdown region, diode as a full
and half wave rectifier, limiting and clamping circuits, Zener diodes.
 Week 11: MOSFETs and Applications
Introduction, structure, I-V characteristics, basic configurations as a switch and as amplifier,
circuit design with MOSFETs.
 Week 12: BJTs and Applications
Introduction, structure, I-V characteristics, basic configurations as a switch and as amplifier,
circuit design with BJTs.
 Week 13: Binary Systems
Digital Computers & Systems Binary numbers Number Base Conversion Octal & Hexadecimal
Numbers 1's & 2's Complements Binary codes.
 Week 14: Boolean algebra & Logical Gates
Basic Definitions Boolean Algebra Theorems of Boolean algebra. Boolean Functions Digital
Logic Gates. IC Digital Logic Families.
 Week 15: Combinational Logic
Design Procedure Adders Subtractors, Code conversion Analysis procedure.
