2. How does the project address the problem of the school/community?

Sustainability has long been a common problem in different areas of the country.
Not to mention in the far flung areas where scarcity often takes place and the constituents
have to make ends meet to survive even on a day to day basis of existence because of
conversion of land from agricultural to residential area.

To address this type of problem, our government find ways to cultivate and maximize the land
area even the smallest one and one of this project is “Gulayan sa Paaralan” under the
implementation of Department of Education. In this program, focus was not only concentrated
on greening project but also on agricultural-based programs.
The school has been a basic foundation of skills and learning and is the ideal point for a project
such as the “Gulayan sa Paaralan” and Malixi Integrated School is openly embracing this
project. As this school is situated in the middle of the banana plantation in which backyard
gardening is not evident because of scarcity in land area, this “Gulayan sa Paaralan” will help
promote cooperation between the school and community to address the problem in the
scarcity of food especially the nutritious vegetables and most-need herbal plants. This project
will not only benefit the children regarding sustainability but will embed in their consciousness
the realization of how important these vegetables, their nutrients and vitamins and the effect
of healthy living are. It will promote organic farming in a way that the knowledge and skills in
Agri-Crop Production of the students will be applied because sustaining the GPP needs enough
knowledge about farming.
Eventually, this will answer the problem for Income Generating Project because implementing
the GPP will be turned into profit not only for the school per se but to the community where
this project is implemented. The harvested vegetables will also help supplying ingredients
especially when there is Feeding Program. In this way, the school and community can save
money and be sure that they are eating healthy and organic vegetables.
In short, this “Gulayan sa Paaralan” project will not only answer the problem of the school and
its student but also of the community and this project will serve as an inspiration for the
community and awaken their consciousness on the effect of a green environment and organic
farming.
